Liverpool eye move for 'excellent' sensation, Man United also want him

Liverpool still have a lot of areas among their ranks that could do with an upgrade or two.

Last term, the Reds massively underperformed which led to them finishing fifth in the Premier League table.

This lack of form then resulted in Arne Slot being relieved of his duties.

Most people expected the Dutchman to stay in charge of the Reds after he wasn't sacked earlier in the season but, to the surprise of many, Fenway Sports Group changed their mind and chose to appoint Andoni Iraola.

From that point on, many different moves occurred and, even though four new players were brought in, Liverpool still have a fair few problem areas among their ranks.

So, the fact that they're now looking at transfers that they can make in the future is rather reassuring.

Liverpool and Manchester United both want to sign Pierre Kalulu in January

Of all the areas among Liverpool's ranks, the last place you'd expect them to upgrade in January is their defence.

Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo have both become key players for Iraola with each of them filling the gaps left behind by Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley rather successfully.

However, since Araujo is only with Liverpool for a season-long loan, his future is still undecided.

The Uruguayan is a tad older than the Reds' usual targets so, the fact that they're eyeing another defender who can play as a centre-back or a right-back makes a decent amount of sense.

As per an update from TuttoJuve, the Frenchman is wanted as a January transfer by Liverpool and Manchester United.

"Manchester United and Liverpool are reportedly ready to return to the player during the January transfer window, as both clubs are seeking defensive reinforcements capable of adapting immediately to the pace of the Premier League," they wrote.

"Kalulu possesses qualities that are particularly prized in England: pace, aggressiveness in duels, and the ability to play multiple positions. There are no official offers at this time.

"However, the interest could become a concrete dossier if one of the two clubs decides to intervene in the winter transfer window."

Liverpool signing Pierre Kalulu would only make sense if he's cheaper than Ronald Araujo

Before Araujo was signed, Liverpool getting their hands on Kalulu would have been a very smart move.

Much like the former Barcelona captain, his versatility is one of the main things that clubs look for in their players.

The ability to play in more than one position massively helps for squad planning and, since these players are often hard to come by, they can sometimes demand premium fees.

In Araujo's current deal, Liverpool have a €55 million option to buy him.

At the moment, that seems like a fairly solid deal (around £47 million) but, with his injury history and poor performances from previous seasons taken into account, it still feels like a bit of a risk.

So, the fact that Kalulu is being linked makes a lot of sense.

But, with Juventus not wanting to sell him, the Serie A giants could end up demanding a massive fee and, if that comes to an amount higher than Araujo's, it doesn't really make sense for Liverpool to sign the "excellent" defender.
