Liverpool are prepared to rival
Manchester United
in the race to sign Manu Kone, according to
Football Insider
.
Andoni Iraola’s side had scouts watching the
Roma
midfielder at the World Cup, where he featured for fourth-placed France. He has been identified as one of the Reds’ leading targets.
Iraola is keen to strengthen his midfield this summer. The new Liverpool boss wants a more defensive-minded option, and Kone fits that profile neatly. His physicality, energy and ball-carrying suit the high-intensity style Iraola favours.
United’s interest may not be as advanced as first thought. Sources suggest the Old Trafford club have so far only monitored Kone’s situation, leaving the door ajar. Liverpool believe they could yet pip their rivals to a deal.
The Reds have been assessing several midfield options. They recently cooled their interest in Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, preferring a different profile. Kone offers a more defensive presence, and would represent a cheaper alternative to the Conference League winner.
United’s own business could work in Liverpool’s favour. Having already signed Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, a third midfield addition may be harder to justify, and Kone could struggle for guaranteed minutes at Old Trafford.
Roma’s stance will ultimately decide matters. The Serie A side value Kone at around €50m (£42.5m) and are reluctant sellers, but their financial situation may force their hand. He still has three years left on his contract.
Their need to comply with financial regulations is pressing. Like several Italian clubs,
are under pressure to raise funds, and a substantial Premier League offer could prove difficult to turn down.
Kone is not short of admirers elsewhere, either. Atletico Madrid have pursued him, while Chelsea and PSG have also been linked, ensuring any move will be fiercely contested.
His World Cup displays have only added to the interest. Kone started four matches for France, chosen ahead of Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, and impressed in their run to the semi-finals.
