Liverpool have agreed a favourable financial package which will Arne Slot to become Netherlands manager. After sacking him back in May, Liverpool looked set to continue paying Slot's monthly salary until next summer, but the terms of that arrangement will change if he takes charge of his country's national team.

Slot emerged as their top candidate to replace Ronald Koeman after the Dutch national team were knocked out of the World Cup at the last-32 stage by Morocco . Though there is not another major tournament for some time, they do want a new permanent head coach in swiftly because of an upcoming Nations League showdown against Germany .

For Slot to be the man that leads them in that clash and beyond, a financial agreement was likely needed with Liverpool and that looks to have been struck but not in the expected way.

According to De Telegraaf , Liverpool have decided to 'top up' Slot's wages in order to match what he earns during his first year with the Netherlands with what he would have received had he stayed at Anfield. This move favours all parties and is set to save Liverpool millions

Clubs have traditionally paid out a full compensation package upon sacking a manager, but the approach has shifted towards suspending coaches after their dismissal while continuing to pay their monthly salaries instead.

Slot pocketed just under £7million during his debut season, with bonuses tied to the Premier League title triumph pushing that figure higher.

While some managers have been known to forfeit money owed from a previous employer upon taking a new position, Slot will carry on receiving payments from Liverpool - and on seemingly favourable terms at that.

Had Slot been heading to a Premier League rival, the situation would likely have played out very differently - as demonstrated by former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca's move to Manchester City .

Slot is expected to become the second former Liverpool manager to move into international football in a matter of days, following Jurgen Klopp's recent agreement to take over from Julian Nagelsmann as Germany head coach.

Andoni Iraola has stepped into the hot seat at Anfield after Klopp and Slot, with the 44-year-old holding his first official press conference as Liverpool boss on Monday.

Iraola covered a wide range of subjects, including transfers , his tactical approach, the squad available to him and much more. Perhaps the most fascinating response came when he was quizzed on why he favours short-term contracts, having put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Anfield.

On that decision, he said: "Two-year deals, coaching, contracts don't matter a lot. I don't want to be in a place because of a contract. I sign year to year, basically. A lot of managers have long contracts but sometimes the club doesn't want it.

"As a player, it's important but as a manager, it's not important. If you are happy, I am happy. I want to stay here a lot more years, it means I have done a good job. I have done it every time like this."

Had that been the duration of the deal Slot agreed back in 2024, Liverpool would not have been required to pay a penny to part company with him just a few months ago.
