Liverpool's plan for injury-stricken star is a massive boost

Liverpool have been rather unlucky with injuries as a club over the last 18 months.

Since the start of the 2025/26 season, several of the Reds’ first team have suffered serious injuries that have sidelined them for significant periods of time.

Alexander Isak missed a large portion of his first season in Merseyside, and other players like Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley are still sidelined with injuries they picked up last season.

The Reds have had a rough time, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and a new report has given an update on a likely plan for one star to return to first team action.

Liverpool planning for return of injured star

Giovanni Lenoi was an incredibly exciting prospect when he arrived at Anfield just weeks after the Reds had lifted their 20th league title.

The Italian defender arrived with high praise and tonnes of potential, but his Liverpool career started in the worst way possible.

78 minutes into his debut, a Carabao Cup win over Southampton, the teenager was stretchered off the pitch having torn the cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The prognosis at the time was roughly a year on the sideline and now, 51 weeks later, an update has been given on a possible return for the defender.

In a report for Football Insider, Peter O’Rourke shared that the club plan to phase Leoni back in slowly, with fears that rushing the defender back could lead to more injury issues.

With Jeremy Jacquet playing brilliantly alongside Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez fully fit, there is little rush to get Leoni back onto the pitch.

The club appear to be willing to take their time with Leoni’s recovery, and as the defender returns to team training it could still be a while before he steps foot on the pitch in a competitive game again.

This approach will hopefully ensure that the 19-year-old, who looked very impressive on his debut, will be available consistently as Liverpool get to the business end of the season and supporters will be excited to see exactly what the Italian can do when he returns.
