Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister admits it "makes me sad" that two of his midfield colleagues have been handed new contracts whilst he's received no offer to extend his stay at Anfield.

Mac Allister was the subject of interest in the summer and his deal, which expires in the summer of 2028, continues to wind down with the Liverpool bosses yet to make moves about offering him an extension.

The Argentine, who joined the club when Jurgen Klopp was in charge, feels as though his effort levels cannot be questioned, nor can his achievementa since moving to the Reds, where he won the Premier League just over a year ago.

Mac Allister has had to watch Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, who play the same position, be handed new deals and that has made an impact on him.

1. Head THIS WAY

The World Cup winner said: "There was a chance (I could leave in the summer) as everyone knows. I received the news the club had made a decision not to offer me a new contract which of course makes me very very sad. Everybody can see I give 100% for this club every single day in training.

"I have good games and bad games like everyone and always I give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me happy as they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad as I didn't get mine. But there is still time."

Mac Allister has also claimed that no talks were held with him, all communication went through his agent, with Liverpool making it clear they weren't in a position to extend his deal as things stand, casting more doubts over his future.

He said: "There was no direct conversation with me, it was with my agent. I don't want to say things they never said, but what I got from my agent is they weren't in a position to renew me.

"It's really sad, we won Premier League together and went through difficult times together and I will always give my best. We will see what happens but of course it makes me sad."

Some pundits have criticised the make-up of Liverpool's midfield, which lacks a natural defensive midfielder. With Florian Wirtz deployed as the team's No 10, it leaves Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch battling for two spots. The Reds ultimately opted against adding a new midfielder during the summer.
