Man United show “no indication” of keeping key Carrick lieutenant as major overhaul looms

After the Manchester derby, there has been plenty of outcry over Manchester United’s lack of quality fullbacks.

Fullbacks today are no longer just defenders; they also need the instincts of a winger, a creator, and a goalscorer, and the Red Devils do not have anyone who fits that mould.

While a left-back signing dominated the conversation in the summer, next year should also bring a right-back signing into focus. On top of that, fans expect a centre-back addition as well.

The suggestion, then, is that while last year brought an attacking overhaul and this summer a midfield overhaul, the Red Devils could see a defensive overhaul next summer.

Luke Shaw’s long-term Man United future in doubt

For an overhaul to happen, though, players have to make way. According to the Daily Mail’s Nathan Salt, Luke Shaw is one defender likely to do just that.

Salt argues that “With Luke Shaw also set to become a free agent in June, and no indication at the moment that United’s longest-serving player will stay at Old Trafford beyond that, big changes are expected to the back-four after this summer’s midfield rebuild and the new signings made in attack last year.”

Letting Shaw go just like that would be a bold call from INEOS. He started every game last season and performed really well, being pivotal to the resurgence under Michael Carrick in the second half of last season.

Yet, decent as he was in several appearances this season, his deteriorating athleticism has left him exposed, and many now question his status in the team.

While an upgrade on him would certainly be welcomed, if United do let him leave, a double left-back swoop will likely be needed unless Harry Amass steps up massively and earns a key role. In that case, United would still need to sign competition for the young fullback.

Options

Lewis Hall may no longer be a left-back transfer option after committing to a long-term deal at St James’ Park.

Elsewhere, AFC Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert could be a player to watch, with reports suggesting United are following him closely.

Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco is another name to watch, with United reportedly monitoring his situation closely and ready to pounce should he and the Italian champions fail to agree a new deal.
