Man United’s painful AC Milan loss just highlighted how badly INEOS have failed this summer

1

Manchester United reserved their worst pre-season performance for their final friendly of the summer, against AC Milan on Saturday.

United fans were pumped up for the contest considering the team was coming up against former boss Ruben Amorim, who has been widely derided for his poor record during his stint at Old Trafford.

The expectation was the players would be up for the game at the Tarczyński Arena in Wroclaw. However, it was anything but.

The Red Devils took the lead through Harry Maguire from a set-piece delivery, but the momentum fizzled out after that.

Fans are right to be worried

AC Milan equalised after some calamitous defending soon enough as both teams went into the break level.

Patrick Dorgu helped United re-take the lead early in the second half but they collapsed afterwards as the Rossoneri scored three more without reply to win the game 4-2.

The 20-time English league champions will begin their Premier League campaign in a week, and the fans are right to be worried.

While many will point to the fact that it was just a friendly, and it is all about minutes in the tank at this stage, but there are worrying signs.

Midfield, left-back need urgent reinforcements

The midfield still looks unbalanced, with Youri Tielemans struggling for fitness as the match wore on, especially when trying to track back.

It has been clear for some time now that the club needs a physical presence in their engine room, but so far, INEOS have failed to act.

The less said the better about Luke Shaw. United should have signed a successor long back, but they are still dilly-dallying over trying to sign Lewis Hall from Newcastle.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes missed yet another penalty, while his overall performance was abject. Matheus Cunha still needs time to pick up rhythm.

INEOS have let Carrick down

Carrick is no closer to settling on his ideal midfield partnership, especially with Mason Mount injured. There is still no clarity on the future of Marcus Rashford as well. So many questions and so little time left.

INEOS need to sign a defender, midfielder and another striker before the summer window closes. Otherwise, things could go sideways for the club very soon and Michael Carrick
