Man Utd can still sign Lewis-Skelly as Arsenal open door to transfer

Manchester United are still keen on signing Myles Lewis-Skelly this summer, as per reports. And the Red Devils have been given a glimmer of hope in that Arsenal are willing to sell under a strict condition.

Michael Carrick has been looking for reinforcement in midfield and at left-back this summer, two positions in which Lewis-Skelly thrives. Although, with Carlos Baleba set to arrive at Old Trafford imminently following the striking of a £70million deal with Brighton and Hove Albion, it appears as though the left-hand side of defence is now United's priority.

A move for Lewis-Skelly seemed clear cut when Arsenal brought in Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a £75m move earlier this month, threatening the 19-year-old's prospects of playing in the heart of midfield.

However, he received a timely lift when handed a place in the starting XI alongside Declan Rice during Friday's 3-0 victory over Coventry City, albeit with his Brazilian rival sidelined through injury for the season opener.

Lewis-Skelly also started and grabbed an assist in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City. However, according to The Sun, Arsenal are willing to part with the teenager should a club match their valuation of Lewis-Skelly, which stands at upwards of £50m.

It had previously been assumed that Lewis-Skelly was firmly off the table at the Emirates Stadium, but recent developments point in a different direction, with just over a week remaining in the summer transfer window.

United are in the market for a new left-back, having already been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Lewis Hall from Newcastle, though they reportedly baulk at Arsenal's hefty asking price.

Luke Shaw remains the first-choice option for United, yet he is approaching his 13th campaign at the club and has only one further season remaining on his deal. Patrick Dorgu, who featured in the defeat to Hull in an attacking position, and academy prospect Harry Amass, are also alternatives in that role.

Lewis-Skelly has not publicly commented on transfer speculation regarding his future this summer, though he did express his desire to build a legacy in North London when penning fresh terms last year.

He said at the time: "I want a legacy. I want to win everything there is to win in the game. I want to win trophies on the biggest stages whilst being a person that's always learning and stays grounded, which is so important."

When questioned whether United need reinforcements at left-back following the 2-0 loss at Hull, head coach Carrick explained: "I just think we're looking to strengthen the squad.

"We're certainly working towards that, making the most of the situation that we have and trying to improve things and trying to move forward.

"I said the same thing to you last time. Certainly trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than we went into it. And I think we're a good way to doing that, so far."

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, stated that he was "100%" confident that Lewis-Skelly would be an Arsenal player beyond the end of the transfer window.
