Man Utd legend speaks out to ‘apologise’ for ‘misjudging’ one Red after being slammed by Leeds defender

Wayne Rooney has sought to make amends with Benjamin Sesko after accusing him of feigning injury to miss matches.

The forward was ruled out of Manchester United’s clash with Fulham a fortnight ago before also missing out on Slovenia’s fixtures over the international break.

After the stalemate at Craven Cottage, Sesko was bizarrely criticised by some former Reds when it was revealed that his problem was a re-aggravation of his shin injury.

Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt suggested Sesko should be playing unless his shin is broken, while Rooney proceeded to echo the sentiment days later, saying: “Shin? Has he broken it? You can hurt your shin. You can take tackles. I bet he’s wearing them little stupid shinpads as well.

“If you’re trying to play No.9 and you’ve got a must-win game and you’ve got a sore shin and you’re not playing, that’s a big part of the problem.

Rooney later added: “Unless you physically can’t play, you play when you’re injured. I remember before games we used to get injections and the doctor used to put them in your a*se.”

The aftermath of the unnecessary Sesko criticism

It led to Leeds United’s Saka Bijol – Sesko’s Slovenian compatriot – speaking out to slam the ex-players.

“I hope and believe that Beni knows how to distance himself from this kind of pressure. When things aren’t going your best on the pitch, and you have certain doubts, reading things like this can make your confidence even worse,” he argued.

“He shouldn’t pay too much attention to it, since we all know what quality he has. He himself knows what kind of footballer he is, and I think he always shows it with incredible things on the pitch.”

Now, however, Rooney has backtracked on his original statements.

Reports over the last two weeks have indicated that United are concerned about Sesko’s condition, and he has remained at Carrington to undergo further assessments and tests to determine the severity of his setback.

“It’s long-term, Sesko? Well, if it’s long-term, then I suppose I should apologise,” United’s record goalscorer said. “I apologise, Sesko. I apologise if I misjudged you. Sorry.”

Prior to his layoff, the 23-year-old had returned two goals in his six appearances across all competitions.
