Manchester City sign Enzo Fernández for British-record fee of £125m

Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea in a British-record transfer worth £125 million.

The 25-year-old Argentina international has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, keeping him at City until the summer of 2031. The fee matches the record Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer.

Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in January 2023 and went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s leading central midfielders. He made 170 appearances for the Blues across all competitions last season and helped them win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.

The midfielder has also enjoyed major success on the international stage, winning the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América with Argentina.

Fernández worked under City boss Enzo Maresca during his time at Chelsea and was keen to reunite with the manager in Manchester.

He was left out of Chelsea’s recent wins over Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion as the transfer saga developed.

The move represents another huge piece of business for City, who have now broken their own transfer record twice this summer. Fernández follows Elliot Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116m.
