Manchester United have been urged to consider a surprise move for former Real Madrid star Karim Benzema as they look to add more experience and depth to their attack.

The veteran forward is currently available as a free agent after leaving Al-Hilal, and Rio Ferdinand believes his qualities could give Michael Carrick another option in the final third.

Karim Benzema emerges as Manchester United option

United have struggled to find consistency at centre-forward this season, with Benjamin Sesko’s fitness problems limiting his involvement and Joshua Zirkzee falling down the pecking order. Matheus Cunha has subsequently been used in a more advanced role, despite being better suited to operating with freedom behind the main striker.

Ferdinand feels the club could benefit from bringing in an experienced number nine who can provide a reliable focal point while also helping younger attackers develop.

Benzema would certainly fit that profile. The former Ballon d’Or winner remains an accomplished goalscorer with extensive experience at the highest level. He also scored ten goals in 12 league appearances for Al-Hilal before leaving the Saudi club.

Benzema could provide valuable experience

A move for the Frenchman would represent a short-term solution rather than a long-term investment, but Ferdinand believes his presence could still add significant value to United’s squad.

The 38-year-old could share responsibilities with Sesko while offering the Slovenian valuable guidance during an important stage of his development.

Ferdinand also mentioned Danny Welbeck as another experienced forward who could have strengthened United’s options.

It remains to be seen whether United will explore the free-agent market for attacking reinforcements. However, with Carrick still searching for greater consistency in the final third, an experienced striker could prove useful as the season progresses.
