Mikel Arteta's dream Arsenal attack for new season with Vinicius Jr and new striker

Attacking additions are very much on Arsenal's radar and Mikel Arteta could be boosted by the arrival of not one but two marquee summer signings

The pieces are falling into place for Arsenal to build an attack that could make the rest of Europe tremble.

Reports emerged over the weekend of a serious pursuit of Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior. The Gunners now find themselves in a position to construct the kind of forward line that would not look out of place in the Galacticos' heyday.

Having already identified the left wing as their primary area of focus heading into this summer's market, Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta were forced to think bigger after their pursuit of Morgan Rogers ended in disappointment. Vinicius, it seems, quickly became the answer.

The 26-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu with no breakthrough in extension talks in sight. Los Blancos are growing increasingly wary of the prospect of watching one of football's most electrifying talents walk away for nothing at the end of next season, and that anxiety could yet work in Arsenal's favour.

No official negotiations have taken place between the two clubs or with the player’s representatives, but Arsenal are continuing to monitor the situation carefully before committing to a formal approach. What is clear, however, is that landing him would require extraordinary financial commitment.

Any deal would expand the wage structure considerably and complicate future talks with other high-profile stars at the club. But while such a hefty salary is not without its issues, even for a club as carefully managed as Arsenal, this is not a moment for half-measures.

The transfer market has become so inflated that wingers of lesser standing — Rogers, Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande among them — are fetching upwards of £100m. But the opportunity to acquire a player of Vinicius' standing is one that comes along once in a generation.

His two Champions League winners’ medals with the biggest club in the world, and a near-miss for the Ballon d'Or in 2024, tell the story of a player operating at the very top of the game. Arsenal would be foolish not to make him their record signing if they are able to convince him to join.

The need for that cutting edge in the final third was again laid bare in May, when Arsenal fell to PSG in the Champions League final, having been unable to produce the individual brilliance the match demanded. Vinicius, perhaps more than any player alive, is capable of creating those moments out of nothing.

His arrival would transform Arteta's side from European contenders into genuine favourites. To put it into perspective, the transfer would eclipse even the impact of Mesut Ozil's move from the Bernabeu to N5 in 2013 — and Arsenal, now Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years, are a far more attractive proposition than the team that landed the German a decade ago.

On the pitch, the fit would be seamless. Vinicius would claim the left-wing position as his own, with Christos Tzolis and Gabriel Martinelli providing reliable cover across what is certain to be a long and arduous campaign fought on four fronts. On the opposite flank, Arteta is well served. Bukayo Saka is on the road back to full fitness after an injury-affected couple of seasons, with Noni Madueke and exciting youngster Max Dowman on hand to deputise when required.

It is through the middle where the second piece of the puzzle becomes equally important. Viktor Gyokeres led the line for much of last season following his £64m arrival, but the Swede's contribution is largely limited to his finishing — a crucial attribute, but not alone sufficient at the highest level. Kai Havertz, meanwhile, has repaid the faith Arteta showed in bringing him from Chelsea in 2023, delivering in the biggest matches and integrating effectively into the system. Yet his injury history continues to cast a shadow over his long-term reliability.

Neither player compares favourably to Julian Alvarez. The Atletico Madrid forward has been on Arsenal's radar for far longer than Vinicius, and Arteta is said to regard him as the complete striker — a player with the physical presence to lead the line and the intelligence and instinct to finish at the highest level.

The sticking point has been Alvarez's reported preference for a move to Barcelona, but Atletico's firm refusal to do business with a La Liga rival has effectively closed that door and potentially opened another for Arsenal.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, Atletico would give genuine consideration to an offer of £51.7m combined with Gyokeres. It would be a bold and complex deal, not least because it would require sporting director Andrea Berta to acknowledge that the Gyokeres experiment has already run its course.

However, Berta is better placed than most to navigate that complexity, as he was instrumental in bringing Alvarez to Atletico from Manchester City in the first place. His intimate knowledge of the player's situation could prove invaluable in getting a deal over the line.

At 26, both Alvarez and Vinicius are entering what should be the most productive years of their careers. The prospect of both playing in Arsenal’s red and white in the same forward line next season is the kind of thing that has long existed only in the imagination of supporters. But it is now within reach.

The Gunners’ defensive unit is already seen as the finest in world football. If the club can now match that standard going forward, by committing fully to the pursuit of two of the most complete attacking players on the planet, then Arteta will have the tools to build something that goes beyond simply winning trophies. He will have built a side capable of defining an era.
