Mohamed Salah's new manager has had his resignation blocked by Trabzonspor after the club crashed out of the Europa League.

Trabzonspor had been hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in their play-off tie, but were thrashed 4-0 by Hungarian side Ferencvaros on Thursday night.

An early red card from summer signing Ruslan Malinovskyi had left the Turkish side facing an uphill battle to qualify for the league phase of the competition.

Callum O'Dowda quickly extended Ferencvaros' aggregate lead with a 19th-minute opener on the night, before Marius Corbu put the hosts 2-0 up shortly after half-time.

Any lingering hopes of a Trabzonspor fightback were dashed when they were reduced to nine men when another summer arrival Sidny Cabral was shown a second yellow card in the 57th minute, before Bamidele Yusuf scored from the penalty spot.

With Trabzonspor facing the risk of a significant thrashing and having already seen their Europa League hopes dashed, Salah was substituted just after the hour mark.

Trabzonspor's nightmare night in Europe was completed late on when Krisztian Lisztes added a fourth for Ferencvaros in the closing minutes.

The failure to qualify for the Europa League comes as a major blow for Trabzonspor following the club's efforts to strengthen in the transfer window, including paying Salah an annual salary of £8.5million and a signing fee of £6million.

Trabzonspor have also signed Salah's former Liverpool team-mate Fabinho and brought back Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana for a second season on loan.

Head coach Fatih Tekke announced to reporters after the match that he was resigning from his position following the defeat.

'We had a very sad night, of course, the reason is me and my team,' Tekke said, as reported by Fanatik.

'It was a sad night for both our country and our community. It looked like it was going to be a positive match right up until the red card.

'As a result, we failed to qualify for the Europa League. For the past 18 months, day and night, my team and I have been thinking about what we can do to improve just a little bit more.

'The team will be much, much better, that's for sure.

'I won't drag this out, effective immediately, I am resigning from my 18-month tenure.

'I feel I have the right to impose this punishment on myself.'

Despite Tekke's declaration, Trabzonspor released a statement declaring that his resignation had not been accepted and he will remain in charge of the team.

'Fatih Tekke has decided to resign due to the emotional intensity caused by the defeat following the Ferencvaros match,' the statement read.

'As the Trabzonspor Board of Directors, our Fatih Tekke's resignation decision has not been accepted.

'Fatih Tekke continues in his role and will be at the helm of our team in the Amedspor match we will play in the league.'

Following their Europa League exit, Trabzonspor will drop into the Conference League with Salah's side set to discover their group phase opponents today.

Salah has featured four times for Trabzonspor since completing his lucrative move in the summer, having agreed to tear up the final year of his Liverpool contract.

The Egyptian star scored his first goals for the club last week, netting a brace in a 2-0 win over Basaksehir.
