“Must focus on…”: Michael Carrick explains how United need to approach the Manchester derby

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has opened up on the importance of home support ahead of the 199th Manchester derby. The Red Devils host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, 13 September, in the Premier League.

The teams arrive at the game on contrasting fortunes. While the Citizens have won all three games in the league this season, United have one win and one defeat in as many outings.

However, the Red Devils will be buoyed by their midweek 4-0 win over Sabah in the Champions League. United famously picked up a 2-0 win over their bitter rivals at Old Trafford at the beginning of the year, which was Carrick’s first game in charge during his initial spell as caretaker manager.

The Englishman went on to secure third place in the Premier League table, helping United qualify for the Champions League, while also earning the permanent role at Old Trafford.

Sharing his views in the official programme notes ahead of the game, Carrick acknowledged the importance of the Manchester derby. He said: “We know that the Manchester derby will be a totally different game. That days and games like these are the ones that you live for at Manchester United.”

“This is always such a significant fixture in any season and always a fantastic opportunity. Because performing in these games can create real momentum and provide memories that are talked about for years to come.”

The Englishman also thanked the fans for their support earlier this year, when the Red Devils defeated City at home in his first game in charge. He said: “We saw in January, in my first game as head coach, just what a magical place Old Trafford is when there’s this infectious energy across the whole ground.”

“That connection between you and the players has been brilliant since I returned and I hope we’ll see more of it again this afternoon.”

Carrick hints at United approach

Carrick went on to suggest that his team will be playing to their strengths against City on Sunday. He said: “As we welcome Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City side, we must focus on playing to our own strengths and using the atmosphere this stadium can create to our advantage.”

“I want to thank you for your ongoing support, both here and away from Old Trafford. We are all hungry for another special day, so let’s give everything together.”

United have scored seven goals in three games this season, with only Arsenal and Chelsea – who have played a game more – and Brighton & Hove Albion scoring more. However, the Red Devils have also conceded six times, which will concern fans ahead of Sunday’s game.
