Newcastle United complete £50m signing of Nico Gonzalez: Toon finally land midfield target after missing out on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Johan Manzambi - with ex-Man City man unveiled at St James' Park

Newcastle have completed the £50m signing of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.

The 24-year-old Spanish midfielder was unveiled on the pitch at St James' Park before the Magpies' Carabao Cup clash with West Brom after agreeing a long-term deal.

Gonzalez will wear the No 6 shirt and is in line to make his debut at Tottenham on Saturday.

The signing comes as a major boost for new boss Matthias Jaissle after the departure of midfielders Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali to Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.

The club also missed out on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who rejected a move to Newcastle, and Swiss star Johan Manzambi, who joined Aston Villa.

'I can't wait to experience that as a home player.'

Gonzalez began his career at Barcelona and had a loan spell at Valencia before joining Porto in 2023.

He moved to Manchester City at the end of the 2025 winter transfer window for £50m, and went on to make nearly 60 appearances there.

Magpies head coach Jaissle said: 'I'm very happy to see Nico become a Newcastle United player.

'He brings serious quality and elite experience in a key area of the pitch.

'Nico is a really strong ball carrier – somebody who can drive the team forward while staying composed under pressure.

'He also brings discipline defensively, he reads the game well and his physicality makes him well suited to the Premier League.

Gonzalez becomes Newcastle's seventh summer addition after winger Bazoumana Toure, Dutch midfielder Sean Steur, French midfielder Aladji Bamba, Bosnian full-back Amar Dedic and goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen.
