Nunez in line for unexpected Liverpool reunion after transfer twist

Mohamed Salah could soon be joined at Trabzonspor by Darwin Nunez, with Salah's former Liverpool team-mate also a transfer target for the ambitious Turkish Super Lig outfit.

Salah announced back in March that the 2025-26 campaign would be his final one as a Liverpool player after reaching an agreement with the Reds to cancel the final year of his contract. Speculation over the 33-year-old's next move has been rife in recent weeks before Besiktas emerged as a potential destination for Salah.

However, the Egypt attacker has now signed a lucrative two year contract with Trabzonspor to become the club's marquee summer signing, and was unveiled in front of fans on Thursday.

With a €17million (£14.5m) a season deal for Salah now signed off, Trabzonspor seemingly have no plans to stop spending and are already targeting Nunez.

The i Paper report that Nunez is another attacking player Trabzonspor are keen on. He is well known to Salah after playing alongside the veteran at Anfield for three years before he was sold off to Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League.

While it remains to be seen if Nunez would be interested in joining Salah in Turkey, the Uruguay international could move this summer.

Tottenham are said to also hold an interest in Nunez, who joined Liverpool in a package worth £85m including add-ons; a club-record fee at the time. He is now understood to be valued at around £17m, such has been the striker's fall from grace over the last two years.

Nunez scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool but should have had more goals to his name across that period. He fell out of favour during the 2024-25 campaign, during which Arne Slot led the Reds to the Premier League title. Nunez started just eight games in the league that season.

Since moving to Saudi Arabia, Nunez has once again struggled for consistency. He scored just six goals in 16 appearances as Al-Hilal were pipped to the Saudi title by Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr.
