Official: Man United confirm signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Carlos Baleba after agreeing a deal worth up to £70 million with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s priority this summer has been a major rebuild in midfield following the departure of Casemiro. That task then took on even greater importance after Manuel Ugarte suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury for Uruguay at the World Cup.

The Red Devils were not the only side on the hunt for new recruits in the engine room, however, which led to an inflated market that saw primary targets like Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes join rivals elsewhere in the Premier League for record-breaking fees.

Conscious of the financial woes from the previous hierarchy, INEOS were intent on only pulling the trigger if a deal made sense for the balance books as much as on the pitch. This led to cheaper alternatives being explored, with £85 million spent signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively.

Nonetheless, there remained the need for an all-action dynamo at the base of Michael Carrick’s midfield; an enforcer with the speed, strength and stamina to dominate transitions and function as the first line of defence.

Having made overtures to sign Baleba last year, only for Brighton’s exorbitant valuation to kill any prospect of a deal, the 22-year-old Cameroon international remained an option on United’s radar this summer. Contact was maintained with his camp across the past twelve months, with an agreement on personal terms remaining in place.

As the window entered its final stage last week, United sensed the opportunity to reignite a pursuit was now feasible, given the Seagulls’ willingness to negotiate at a reduced price. An opening offer worth an initial £60 million was rejected, but there was positivity that a compromise would be struck.

Two days later, this persistence paid off, with United agreeing a total package worth £70 million (£65m up front + £5m in add-ons). Compared to a price tag exceeding £100 million last summer, the deal represents a considerable reward for the Old Trafford hierarchy’s patience.

Signed, Sealed and Delivered

While Manchester United were falling to a dismal defeat away to newly promoted Hull City, Baleba was in M16 completing his medical. He was even spotted taking part in media duties at Carrington on Sunday.

Now, United have confirmed the Brighton enforcer is a Red Devil with a post on social media, asking fans “areyouabaleba”.

This was then followed up by a response from the player himself, confirming “Hi I’m a Baleba!” with official confirmation from the club.

United confirmed the “talented midfielder” has signed a five-year contract until 2031, with the option for an additional twelve months – standard practice at Old Trafford.

When asked by the club’s media team for his reaction, Baleba stated: “It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.

“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level. The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”

These feelings were shared by sporting director Jason Wilcox, who said, “Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League. Carlos’ determination to join Manchester United and his confidence that we will achieve our shared ambitions mean that he is the perfect signing as we continue to build a dynamic and entertaining team ready to compete across multiple competitions.”

Baleba is expected to be handed the No.20 shirt, previously donned by iconic figures such as Robin van Persie and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His new partner in midfield and fellow summer recruit Santos has taken the No.17 shirt he wore for Brighton.

Baleba is currently ruled out with an ankle ligament injury, though it is not expected to rule him out for more than a few weeks. He was unable to take part in any of the Seagulls’ pre-season friendlies, however, suggesting a debut may yet be some time away.

After the disappointment of seeing a dream move to the Theatre of Dreams dashed last summer, Baleba suffered a sharp downturn in form at the start of the 2024/25 season. He was routinely hooked early by Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, who tacitly acknowledged his midfielder’s head had been turned.

United’s recruitment team are understood to be unperturbed by this, believing Baleba’s form in the previous campaign is representative of his true level. A young footballer’s performances will naturally wax and wane as well, which will be further helped by the fact that Carrick is able to call upon Santos, Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount in Baleba’s stead, rather than relying on him to be fit and firing from the get-go.

It was vital that Manchester United added more pace and power to their midfield this summer, as the chastening loss to Hull City on Saturday afternoon proved. Not every contest will prove as difficult as what Carrick’s men faced at the MKM Stadium, but having a No.6 with Baleba’s profile will certainly help avoid a repeat for the remainder of the season.
