"OUT OF ORDER!" Carragher and Rooney in complete agreement after Martinez calls out Man Utd owners in bombshell interview

Jamie Carrgher has slammed Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez for his 'awful' comments following their abject 2-0 loss away to Atletico Madrid. Martinez, 28, strongly criticised United's board for a lack of investment in the summer transfer window, leaving Michael Carrick short in several areas for his first full season in charge.

The Argentine even called out the club's director of football, Jason Wilcox, saying that he 'expects more' from him. Martinez's explosive interview has earned him praise from supporters who are also critical of Wilcox and the rest of United's hierarchy, but Carragher - like Wayne Rooney - believes that he was 'out of order'.

"Doesn't do anybody any good at all, and they (the quotes) will be the story now for the next few days, all about this," the Liverpool legend began on CBS Sports. "Every set of supporters don't like the suits, the guys upstairs, so United fans will lap this up and think it's great.

"I think it's awful that he's come out and said that right now, I do. When he's saying they had a fantastic season last season, they didn't. A manager got sacked last season. Sacked.

To get it, it's a quick and easy one-two:

1. Head THIS WAY

"They finished third because they had no cup games, they weren't in Europe, got knocked out the cup competitions very early. Man United third. The reason they finished third is because Liverpool and Chelsea were that bad as well.

"Now we're seeing the real Manchester United this season. The reason why they didn't buy players in the summer is because the last four or five years since Martinez has been there, I think they've been in the Champions League once - this season (sic).

"So if every season you don't get Champions League money and every season Manchester United are spending £200million in the transfer market, sooner or later it has to stop because the money's not there.

"So this summer, the money Manchester United are paying out, it's for players they bought years ago, the next instalment of it. That's why there isn't that money there, you can't just keep going with it.

"Because there's a squad of players with different managers, they haven't achieved anything. They've been awful, awful again tonight.

"And him as well when he's talking about the start of this season - I think he's a good player, by the way, he's a World Cup winner, I get that - he's had an awful start to the season. Awful, really poor.

"People will lap it up, Manchester United fans will, that doesn't nobody any good at all... This will just be the talk of the town now. This will blow up, explode and I think he's out of order."

Former United captain Rooney was in agreement with Carragher, describing Martinez's comments as 'disrespectful'. "It's a difficult one because I always used to feel like I was outspoken as a player and you want to have your opinion, but I think he's maybe gone too far," the ex-striker told Prime Video Sport.

"That should be down to the manager, and that should stay internal because the fans want to hear the players speak and they want to see them care. He clearly cares and wants the club to invest more money and more players, and if they do that, I think he'll be one of the players out of the door if I'm being honest with his performances.

"His performances haven't been good enough but I think in some ways he is right, in terms of the club need to invest more at the top end of the pitch and in defence as well. I think it looks like that was a bit of an agenda from him because that doesn't mirror the performance. I thought the performance was better.

"I think it's a bit disrespectful to his team-mates as well because he's disrespecting his team-mates, he's saying they're not good enough. I think Bruno [Fernandes] is probably the only one who has any right coming out and saying something like that, if I'm being honest as captain.

"And even then it should be behind closed doors if there are issues, which does happen. Players have conversations with the manager, the manager then has a conversation with the board.

"But that interview there, it's not going to help the situation the club is in at the minute. Now all that's going to bring is more noise around it, the players are unhappy, they're unsettled, they don't trust in their own team-mates, that's not going to help at all."

United boss Carrick put Martinez's criticism down to being in the heat of the moment after Tuesday's defeat. The Red Devils will travel to Leeds on Sunday back in the Premier League and look to do their talking on the pitch.
