Paul Scholes names £60m Arsenal star they should 'get rid of' instead of Myles Lewis-Skelly amid Man United and Chelsea links

Man United legend Paul Scholes believes Arsenal would be making a mistake if they sold Myles Lewis-Skelly this summer - and highlighted another player the Gunners should move on instead.

Lewis-Skelly, 19, enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2024-25, and while he struggled for gametime last time out, he played an important role in the end-of-season run-in.

However, with the £75million addition of Bruno Guimaraes adding to the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino and Eberechi Eze as options in central midfield, it has raised uncertainty over the 19-year-old's future.

Reports then broke earlier this week suggesting Arsenal had offered Lewis-Skelly to both Chelsea and Man United.

And, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, Scholes felt that if Arsenal sanctioned his departure it would be a big mistake.

‘I prefer Myles Lewis-Skelly in centre midfield to Zubimendi,’ Scholes said.

‘I think Zubimendi struggled last year. If there’s one player you are going to get rid of, it would be him [Martin Zubimendi].'

Scholes also pointed to a wider issue if Arsenal were to sell their academy graduate, who can play at left-back and in central midfield.

He added: 'It reminds me a little bit of when Danny Welbeck left Manchester United. I hated it, didn’t like it.

'Now, Danny was a little bit older than Myles Lewis-Skelly, but when you’re losing your own players, it’s disappointing.'

Jamie Carragher agreed with Scholes' thoughts and admitted he was left shocked by the reports.

He said 'Do you think it’s from his side or the club’s side? That’s the thing that was a little bit strange about it. It felt almost like Arsenal offered Manchester United Myles Lewis-Skelly.

'It wasn’t Myles Lewis-Skelly saying I want to leave or his people putting something out. That’s where the shock came from.

'I still can’t believe it. Obviously, last season wasn’t great for him for the whole season, but when a young player has already put in performances like I’ve seen him put in at the Bernabeu...

'He was running the game at the Bernabeu from left-back and then his performance in the Champions League final in central midfield against Paris Saint-Germain.'

Scholes felt Arsenal should move on Martin Zubimendi instead of the young Englishman

Carragher continued: 'You can’t play at that level unless you’re pretty special at that age. All young players have ups and downs. Last season he didn’t play as much as he probably would have liked.

'But, as you just said, his ceiling is so high for the performances he’s already put in as a kid. I couldn’t believe that Arsenal would even think about letting him go.'

When pressed on Lewis-Skelly's future earlier this week, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta refused to give anything away.

'I’m not going to talk about any speculation,' he said. ‘If there is a speculation about our players, that’s a good sign. That means that we attract attention and they’re doing a good job.’
