Premier League issue statement on Sunderland v Chelsea penalty decision

The Premier League set out why Chelsea were not awarded a penalty during Sunday's game between Sunderland and Chelsea, following a contentious incident involving Cole Palmer.
The Premier League said in a match centre post that the on-field decision to play on was checked and confirmed, adding that any contact with Palmer occurred outside the penalty area.
With the score at 0-0 midway through the first half, referee Jarred Gillett rejected Palmer's appeal after a coming together with Luke O'Nien.
Shortly afterwards Sunderland won a penalty when Levi Colwill challenged Brian Brobbey in the box. Despite Chelsea protests that Brobbey was also holding Colwill's shirt, VAR upheld Gillett's call and Colwill was booked following the check.
Sunderland went on to win 1-0 and climbed off the foot of the Premier League table.
