Premier League make feelings clear on VAR after 'significant' error in statement to clubs

The Premier League have come out and highlighted the "significant" VAR call error that marred last weekend's Manchester derby ahead of clubs' latest shareholders' meeting.

Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by their neighbours courtesy of an Erling Haaland goal which was initially ruled out by the on-field officials for offside. However, an intervention from VAR led to the incident being reviewed and given despite the fact that Enzo Fernandez attacked Josko Gvardiol's cross from an offside position.

The decision was swiftly dissected by fans and pundits alike with Gary Neville, commenting on the derby for Sky Sports, predicting an apology would be made to his former club.

Matt Donohue and Blake Antrobus, the VAR officials for the derby, have since been stood down from their duties until after the international break.

The Times report that league officials have sent correspondence to clubs concerning the blunder, which they say has "overshadowed" what has been a positive start to the 2026-27 campaign.

Clubs have also been informed that a review into the incident, which Pro Ref chief Howard Webb conceded was an "error of judgement", is underway.

The Premier League's statement to clubs on the matter reads: “Despite a positive start, early season officiating performance has been overshadowed by a significant VAR error in the Manchester United v Manchester City match on Sunday, September 13.

“The VAR did not recognise an offside offence by Enzo Fernández and incorrectly overturned the original decision of offside to allow the goal to stand. Pro Ref are undertaking a full review of the incident, which will be reviewed by the Premier League, with learnings being adopted immediately.”

Scrutiny on VAR and Pro Ref has ramped up in recent weeks with Webb now said to be under mounting pressure. The incident in the Manchester derby was preceded by complaints from Arsenal and their manager Mikel Arteta over a penalty call during their 2-0 win over Sunderland, raising more questions.

Webb's comments on the Haaland goal were telling, with the former Premier League referee admitting: “I was really disappointed with this outcome. We all are.

“None more so than the officials themselves. They take a lot of personal pride in what they do and they're obviously hurting now, having fallen short in this situation.

“They'll not be officiating again until after the international break.”
