As a hopeful Manchester United supporter, this is exactly the sort of report that brings both excitement and caution. On ability alone, Adam Wharton feels like a superb fit. United have lacked that calm, intelligent presence at the base of midfield for too long, someone who can control tempo, play through pressure and give the team a proper platform. If he really is the player who can “dictate possession from deep and break opposition lines with progressive passing”, then it is easy to understand why the club remain keen.

At the same time, €100 million is enormous. However talented Wharton is, United cannot keep paying premium prices every time a player becomes a top target. There has to be discipline, especially with needs elsewhere in the squad. A striker and left-back still matter, and overspending in one area can easily create fresh problems in another.

From a fan’s perspective, the ideal outcome would be United staying in the race, making it clear they want the player, but refusing to be dragged beyond their valuation. If Palace soften, or if the market changes late in the window, then there may be an opening. If not, United must be prepared to move on quickly.
