The Dutch outlet’s line is unambiguous. “Rumours regarding European clubs for Gakpo have been simmering for weeks,” they wrote. “The Dutch left winger is primarily linked to Tottenham Hotspur. That interest is now becoming serious. The English club sees the Eindhoven native as the missing link to rejoin the top of English football.

“Multiple sources confirm to Spurs’ desire to sign Gakpo. Manager Roberto De Zerbi is fanatically building a new team. Fellow international Jan Paul van Hecke has already been bought, joining from Brighton & Hove Albion for sixty million euros.

“In addition, players such as Andrew Robertson (Liverpool), Marcos Senesi (Bournemouth), Mateus Fernandes (West Ham United), and Sandro Tonali (Newcastle United) have transferred to North London.”

From Tottenham’s perspective, the logic is understandable. Their rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi appears to be targeted, aggressive and aimed at quickly re-establishing them among the division’s strongest sides. A player like Gakpo, comfortable from the left and capable of operating across the front line, fits the profile of someone who can raise the level of the attack without a lengthy adaptation period.

For Liverpool, the situation is more nuanced than a simple sell or keep call. Yet that does not weaken Liverpool’s negotiating position. If anything, it strengthens the need for discipline.

As an unsure Liverpool supporter, this is one of those reports that leaves you torn. On one hand, it is easy to see why Tottenham would want Cody Gakpo. He is experienced, he knows the league and he still feels like a player with plenty left to give in the right setup. On the other hand, his time at Liverpool has never fully settled into something completely convincing, so if a big offer arrives there will naturally be a temptation to listen.

The uncertainty comes from the wider attacking picture. Liverpool are already dealing with major change in the forward line, and that makes any exit feel bigger than it might in a more stable summer. Selling Gakpo without proven replacements in place would feel risky, especially to a domestic rival who could directly benefit from the deal.

There is also the question of timing. If Tottenham really are serious, Liverpool should make that seriousness count financially. No favour, no soft negotiation, no rushed outcome. If Gakpo goes, it has to be for a fee that clearly strengthens the squad rebuild under Iraola.

Supporters can probably accept a sale if the plan behind it is obvious. What would be harder to accept is losing a useful senior attacker and then scrambling late in the window. For now, this feels like a situation to watch closely rather than panic over.
