REST IN PEACE: Jesus de Miguel's teammates carry his coffin at funeral of tragic Tenerife footballer killed in on-pitch collision

The funeral of Jesus de Miguel has taken place, with his Tenerife teammates carrying his coffin at an emotional ceremony on Thursday.

De Miguel passed away at the age of 30 in hospital on Tuesday morning after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who was sent off, in a Spanish Segunda clash on Monday night.

The Tenerife striker suffered head and chest injuries, with a preliminary autopsy report revealing he died of "accidental chest trauma". The football world has been plunged into mourning, with tributes paid around this week's Champions League matches, while thousands of fans gathered at Tenerife's stadium to pay their respects.

De Miguel is survived by his girlfriend Maria and their one-year-old daughter Carla. They were joined at the funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo by De Miguel's teammates, as well as a whole host of club staff and other mourners.

The Tenerife players wore black suits and ties and carried his coffin into the ceremony. Manuel Hernandez, De Miguel's agent and a spokesperson on behalf of the family, then read a statement to reporters.

"In these difficult times for us, we want to sincerely thank everyone for the kind words and expressions of affection we are receiving," he said.

"We don't have enough words to thank you for every message, every call, and every gesture of affection that we are receiving. Thank you to everyone who has remembered him, to his team-mates, friends, fans and all the clubs who have wanted to convey their condolences and accompany us in this painful moment.

"Jesus leaves a void impossible to fill, but also an immense memory in all of us who have been lucky enough to share our lives with him. Thank you for loving him, for remembering him, and for being with us. His family."

According to a neighbour of the De Miguel family in Navahermosa, a village in Toledo, his father had been watching the match against FC Andorra in a bar on Monday night. He immediately started crying after the collision with Owono and gathered his family to fly to Tenerife to be with him immediately.

Tragically, De Miguel's friend Fernando Roman told Spanish outlet Vamos a Ver that they had been planning a family trip before tragedy struck.

"We have to send our love to his family, to Maria, to his daughter Carla, who is a year and a few months old," he said. "It was unbelievable because we were talking about traveling to Disney with the girls, with my daughter too, and look what's happened."

Andorra goalkeeper Owono was forced to disable his social media accounts after receiving abuse in the wake of the incident. The 25-year-old released a statement on Wednesday.

"These are the most difficult days of my life," he said. "I struggle to find the words, and it is very hard for me to come to terms with what has happened. I feel enormous pain over the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family, and everyone who loved him.
