Romano: Carrick ‘super appreciated’ at Man Utd after preventing INEOS from committing major transfer blunder

Manchester United officials are grateful to Michael Carrick, who kept Kobbie Mainoo at the club.

The 21-year-old made his big breakthrough as a teenager under Erik ten Hag, but faded from the scene when Ruben Amorim took over.

Last season, the Englishman didn’t make a single start in the 21 Premier League fixtures under the Portuguese manager, so he was on the cusp of leaving the club in January.

It was only nine months ago when Mainoo was hoping to revive his career with a mid-season move to Napoli, where he would have reunited with Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay.

However, Carrick arrived just in time to salvage the 21-year-old’s MUFC stint. The 45-year-old took over following Amorim’s sacking, and he immediately deployed club captain Bruno Fernandes in his original role as an attacking midfielder, making room for Mainoo in the double pivot alongside Casemiro.

His exploits during the second half of the season were enough to earn him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, although he was an unused substitute throughout the tournament.

In the latest video update posted on his official YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano notes how everyone at Man Utd is delighted with Mainoo, who is considered the present and the future of the club.

Moreover, Carrick’s role in revitalising his career is ‘super appreciated’ by the MUFC officials, as if it weren’t for the manager’s arrival, the young midfielder would have been shipped off to Italy.

Unlike Amorim, who cared little for the club’s academy products, Carrick obviously has a soft spot for Carrington graduates, as he tries to attend the youth ranks’ games whenever he can.

At this stage, Mainoo can be considered the club’s best product in recent years, so Man Utd certainly dodged a bullet by avoiding a sale to Napoli.

Backed by the manager’s trust and an adoring fanbase, the 21-year-old is showing improvement on an almost weekly basis, and he’s already considered crucial for Carrick’s plans.

Mainoo is currently playing alongside Youri Tielemans, but he’s eventually expected to form a partnership with Carlos Baleba, a fellow young midfielder who truly complements him.

If the two midfielders can strike a quick understanding, they will help one another reach the highest levels.
