Ronaldo pays emotional Jota tribute after Portugal win in World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo wore a shirt bearing Diogo Jota's number to mark the one year anniversary of his death following Portugal's win over

Croatia

in the World Cup.

Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos scored the goals that clinched a 2-1 win for Roberto Martinez's men, who survived late drama when VAR intervened to disallow what Croatia and Josko Gvardiol thought was an equalising goal.

And as he and his team-mates revelled in the moment, Ronaldo put on a

Portugal

shirt with 21, the number Jota wore for his country, on before going over to the fans.

He and the team then held the shirt aloft in front of the fans in poignant scenes in Toronto.

An image of Jota was also shown on the big screen during the Portuguese national anthem prior to the game.

In a social media post alongside a photo of the players and Jota's shirt, Ronaldo wrote: "We won for ourselves, for Diogo, and for Portugal!!! LET'S GO!!!!"

Friday marks one year to the day that Jota lost his life at the age of 28 in a car crash alongside his younger brother, Andre Silva.

The

Liverpool

striker had been travelling to the Spanish city of Santander in order to board a ferry to return to the UK alongside his younger brother, 25.

The Portugal squad have

worn wristbands throughout their World Cup campaign

in tribute to Jota, while his parents were in attendance for their opening game against

DR Congo

, where his image was also shown on the big screen.
