Ronaldo suspension confirmed as Portugal FA issue new statement

Portugal have confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended with "disciplinary proceedings" against him beginning as the nation's authorities digest the events of the recent international break.
He walked out of camp following a row with Jorge Jesus, which stemmed from conversations they had over playing time. Ronaldo was angered by his omission, despite Portugal winning all four of their games under their new manager, who took charge after the World Cup.
Ronaldo would later put out a statement, where he underlined the reasons for his actions, criticising the "the absolute breach of trust in the coach’s word". However he admitted he was deserving of a punishment from the Portuguese authorities.
There is huge scope for the suspension that could be handed down to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. Anything that extends beyond a month would see Ronaldo ruled out of his nation’s Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales next month.

A statement from the Portuguese federation read: “The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, of October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7”.
“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process”.
Ronaldo has chosen to play on in the aftermath of his sixth World Cup, despite there being an expectation he would retire, but his actions are now set to see him sidelined for a period.

The 41-year-old claimed: "The consequence of this act of mine must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation. I understand that the punishment should have no mitigating factors. I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor."
When quizzed on Ronaldo's outburst Jesus told reporters: "I read the statement and now, like I do every day, I'm going to the Federation headquarters to work, to think about the Portuguese national team. I have nothing more to say."
