Serie A footballer airlifted to hospital and in intensive care after he almost drowned in a swimming pool at a Sardinian mansion
A Serie A striker is in intensive care after being airlifted to hospital when he almost drowned in a swimming pool at a mansion in Sardinia, Italy.
Top-flight club Cagliari are reported to be 'worried' after 20-year-old French forward Yael Trepy had to be transported to hospital by helicopter following the incident on a day off after their Italian Cup match on Friday.
Reports from Sardinian newspaper Unione Sarda this morning read: 'The accident occurred during the afternoon, when the young striker lost consciousness.' It continued that at hospital 'Trepy performed all the necessary tests, which fortunately were negative.'
Italian national newspaper La Repubblica say Trepy cannot swim and ended up at the deep end of the swimming pool at a mansion in the luxury Costa Smeralda area.
In a statement released this morning Cagliari said: 'Cagliari Calcio announces that the player Yael Trepy is currently hospitalised at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where he is in intensive care.

'The Club is in constant contact with the healthcare facility and the player's family and is closely monitoring the progress of his condition. At this time, Cagliari Calcio's thoughts are with Yael and his family. The Club also requests the utmost respect for their privacy and will provide any updates when available.'
Trepy, who scored once in eight appearances in his Serie A debut campaign last season, started Friday's game against Arezzo, playing 54 minutes.
Sardinia-based Cagliari brought Trepy into their youth academy system in 2022 and he has risen to play in their first team. He won the Italian equivalent of the FA Youth Cup in 2025, scoring in the final against AC Milan.
Cagliari's players were given two days off after beating Arezzo 1-0 and are due to resume training today. Their league season kicks off against Parma on Saturday.
They finished 14th in Serie A last season.
