“Serious option” – Man Utd consider replacing Carrick with ‘the best football brain around’

Manchester United could reportedly resort to Cesc Fabregas if they end up parting ways with Michael Carrick.

The Englishman joined the club as an interim coach following Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January, and was then confirmed in a permanent role after guiding the club to a top-three finish.

However, things have drastically changed for United this season, having only collected five points from as many matches. Therefore, Carrick’s work has come under scrutiny, with his long-term future at Carrington no longer certain.

Carrick may have survived the first international break of the season, but it was reported that if the results don’t improve before the next stop in November, INEOS could decide to wield the axe.

On a more worrying note, United will have to negotiate crucial ties against Spurs, Atletico Madrid, Leeds United, Chelsea, Roma, and Aston Villa in the coming weeks, in addition to a tricky trip to Como, the fastest-rising power in Serie A.

The Lariani have been enjoying a meteoric rise from the lower divisions of Italian football to the Champions League, and have already made short work of RB Leipzig on their historic UCL debut.

Fabregas, who has been the club’s technical orchestrator, has landed on the shortlist of some of the biggest clubs in the world.

According to a popular news account on X (formerly Twitter), Man Utd have joined the fray, identifying the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder as a ‘serious option’ if Carrick is sacked.

Why luring Fabregas won’t be easy for Man Utd

While United’s interest in Fabregas is hardly surprising, luring the Spaniard in the middle of the campaign remains a far-fetched dream.

After all, Fabregas is enjoying his experience at Como, as the club has bought him an exciting group of young players, who have been thriving under his tutelage, the likes of Nico Paz, Assane Diao, and Matrin Baturina.

Furthermore, the 2010 World Cup winner is a minority stakeholder at Como, so his ties with the Italian club run deep.

Fabregas’ former Chelsea captain John Terry described him as ‘the best football brain’ he had ever seen.

Perhaps he might decide to embark on a new experience in the summer, but would Man Utd go for another interim manager to see out the campaign?
