Sesko makes statement after Man United injury as striker apologises to fans

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has issued an apology while confirming that he has withdrawn from the Slovenia squad for the upcoming international matches. Sesko's injury was a blow for United over the weekend, resulting in his absence from the squad that faced Fulham in the Premier League.

Sesko has made six appearances for United this season but has yet to start a single Premier League match. Michael Carrick instead started the striker in the Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton and the Champions League win over Sabah.

Since Sesko did not feature against Fulham due to injury, doubts arose over whether he would be available to represent his country during the extended international break.

The 23-year-old has now issued an apology on social media after confirming that he will no longer be part of the Slovenia squad for their upcoming Nations League games.

"I am very sorry that I will have to miss the national team's upcoming matches. I have always played for Slovenia - and always will - with heart and pride,” Sesko wrote in a post on Instagram, translated from Slovenian.

"Right now, the most important thing is to focus fully on my recovery. I am already working on getting back on the pitch as soon as possible to help both the national team and my club once again.

"I believe in our guys, and I am certain that this time, too, they will display the team spirit that has always defined us. I can't wait to wear the national team jersey again; until then, I will be Slovenia's biggest supporter. Go Slovenia."

Sesko had initially been named in the Slovenia squad for the nation’s round of matches over the next few weeks. Slovenia will face Scotland in a double header in the Nations League and will also have games against North Macedonia and Switzerland.

United also confirmed that Sesko had withdrawn from the Slovenia squad and provided an update on the striker’s fitness.

“Benjamin will undergo tests this week before defining his individual recovery plan,” United confirmed.

Carrick was asked about Sesko’s absence from the United squad over the weekend. The United boss remains hopeful that the striker does not face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"He [Sesko] just felt a little bit of pain after the game the other night [against Brighton]," Carrick told MUTV on Sunday.

"We're assessing that. Hopefully, it's not too bad but we will have to see."
