Sir Alex Ferguson says a 2012 New York dinner with Pep Guardiola might have changed Manchester United’s future. According to Goal.com, the Scot recounts the episode in his new book, Games of My Life.

The pair met a year before Ferguson stepped down after 27 years in charge. Guardiola had already built an elite reputation with Barcelona and was, by then, set on Bayern Munich.

Ferguson reflects that his own plans were not settled at the time and that an earlier approach could have altered the course. He says he would have done everything to sway Guardiola, even over Tignanello, and to argue that his future should be in Manchester.

He finalised his retirement only after his sister-in-law died in December 2012. David Moyes succeeded him in July 2013, lasting 10 months. Guardiola collected seven major honours at Bayern, then went on to dominate with Manchester City.

Ferguson also praises Guardiola’s standards and methods. The Catalan left City at the end of last season after six league titles and a Champions League in a decade. The club are appealing financial charges, which they firmly deny.
