Antonio Conte admits in his next job he wants to take a fallen giant back to its former glory - fuelling suggestion he would take the Manchester United gig.

The Italian has been out of work since leaving Napoli last season, where he again claimed silverware during his brief two-year stint. He became only the second manager to deliver the Serie A title to Naples since the days of Diego Maradona in the late 1980s.

It has furthered a CV that has also seen Conte win league titles at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan. He has Premier League experience having led the Blues, winning the title at the first attempt, and also managing Tottenham for a period.

His winning habit has seen him linked with the Old Trafford hotseat in the past following constant failures at United. They're again under the pump following a slow start to the year and Conte has confessed that bringing a huge club back to the top is something he would relish.

1. Head THIS WAY

He told the Athletic: "If you go to a club where the history speaks for itself - a history made up of trophies, league titles and victories - you can only honour that history in one way: by having the ambition to bring that club back, if it isn't there today, to fight for those goals.

"I know full well that only one team can win every year, but I must carry in my heart, and instil in the hearts of the fans, my players and my directors, that spark, that hope that makes you say, 'f***, we can win'. You only make history by winning.

"There are many clubs that have somewhat lost sight of their history. I'd like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more. Clubs where there's pressure, where, ultimately, you know full well that you're not going there just to take part, but to compete."

United's last league title came in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season, but that 2013 success is now a distant memory for fans. They've been unable to mount a season-long charge since then and simply making the top four has become their remit over the past decade.

Conte's brief managerial stints have previously been flagged as an issue with the Italian not spending longer than two years in any club job since he was in charge at Juventus from 2011 to 2014.

Gary Neville claimed in the past that Conte on the red side of Manchester would not be the right blend. “I don’t think they’ll go for that option, personally," he said. "He’s a great manager but I think certain managers fit certain clubs and I don’t think Conte fits United personally."
