Sydie Peck calls what he’s seen at Sheffield United “unacceptable”

Sydie Peck has issued an honest message to Sheffield United fans after their defeat to Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup.

Sheffield United midfielder Sydie Peck apologised to fans for the defeat at Fleetwood Town on Wednesday night, which he described as ‘unacceptable’.

It has been a mixed start to the campaign for the Blades, who are 15th in the Championship, just two points away from the play-offs, although they haven’t always convinced with their performances.

Despite losing 1-0 to Wolves last time out in the league, Chris Wilder’s side put in arguably their best performance of the season, so they had hoped to use that as a springboard.

Yet, even though the manager made changes, a strong Blades XI were beaten by Fleetwood, with the League Two side setting up a tie against champions Arsenal.

The manner of the defeat was concerning, as Wilder’s men failed to fully stamp their authority over their lower-league opponents, and they certainly didn’t create enough chances.

Therefore, the fans were understandably furious, and the loss, combined with the inconsistent start in the league, means they’re starting to point fingers at the players and manager.

Peck is one of few to emerge with credit for his displays this season, and whilst he was only brought on as a sub against the Cod Army, the midfielder sent an honest message to fans via his Instagram Story as he reflected on the game.

“Unacceptable last night," Peck wrote.

"Down to us as a team to put things right. We can only apologise to the travelling fans and thank you for your continued support.”

Obviously, it was a hugely disappointing night for Sheffield United, as they lacked a cutting edge in the final third, and the goal they conceded was poor for a number of reasons.

They made their feelings clear to Wilder and the team after the game, and many expressed their anger on social media, which was understandable.

So, Peck deserves credit for fronting up, and the fans will appreciate what he has had to say, even if he is one of few who won’t be receiving criticism for his performances, as the 22-year-old has been very good on an individual basis.

But, it’s a team game, and, as he says, the spotlight is now on the players to put this right, as they must take responsibility for the loss, along with the manager.

Sheffield United need to build momentum going into the international break

With an extended international break set to follow after Sheffield United’s trip to Stoke City on Saturday, it’s crucial they get a win to lift the mood around the club.

Of course, it’s still early days, so the season isn’t going to be defined by a loss, but, for a combination of reasons, the Blades feel as though they need a lift, which winning can provide.

We know how quickly things can change in football, and the upcoming break will give Wilder a chance to work with the bulk of his players on a daily basis, which he will no doubt be keen to do. So, attention now turns to Stoke, and, as Peck says, the players must react in the right way.

It won’t be easy against a much-improved Potters side, but it’s a fixture the Blades will believe they can pick up three points from, and Peck could have a big role to play.
