THE BATTLE BEHIND THE DEAL! Guimaraes, Arsenal, Newcastle and the secret transfer war both clubs are now desperate to win

There we have it then. Bruno Guimaraes will join Arsenal from Newcastle in a deal worth £75million.

It has become a familiar trend for the Magpies. Stand firm in the face of interest from their Premier League rivals, before ultimately sanctioning an agreement.

Guimaraes follows Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali out of St James’ Park. A talent drain which has seen ambition move from conquering Europe to being able to qualify for it in the first place.

But as the dust settles on another transfer saga, the real battle begins in earnest. The PR war.

It’s the battle every club is desperate to win. The battle played out in secret, with the victor usually declared on social media.

Winning favour with supporters after signing a player is easy, nobody has ever complained about receiving a shiny new toy. But for the selling club, it’s about softening the blow and explaining why they would have been silly not to do it in the first place.

Guimaraes to Arsenal is perhaps a perfect case study. After all, initial reports suggested Newcastle wanted £100m for their Brazilian talisman.

That’s the amount they received for Tonali, while Isak fetched a British record £125m a year ago. So the final figure is a huge win for the Gunners, whittling down £25m for a player Mikel Arteta was desperate to land.

Arsenal will rightly suggest that in a market that has seen Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers go for more than £100m, getting Guimaraes for £75m in 2026 is quite frankly a bit of a bargain (in ridiculous Premier League terms).

Case closed then, Arsenal the winners, Newcastle the losers…cue gloating from the Gunners and meltdown from the Magpies. Or perhaps not so fast.

Because from the Newcastle side, this is unequivocally another transfer win. The Chronicle report that the Gunners opened negotiations with a frankly paltry offer of £45m.

That wouldn’t even get you a Crysencio Summerville in a transfer window which has seemed to only veer from the ludicrous to the ridiculous.

Newcastle needed a bidding war to even get close to their valuation…or so they feared. Sources from Tyneside insist Arsenal were bidding against themselves, such was their desperation to land the midfielder.

In the end, Newcastle will boost their coffers to the tune of £75m, for a player - while still at the peak of his powers - will turn 29 in November.

And unlike so many modern transfers, it has been stressed this will be paid up-front, immediately giving the Toon a much needed cash-injection. And let’s not beat around the bush, they need that.

They need to change the narrative on a window which has seen key players AND Eddie Howe leave the club. They also need to provide prospective new boss Matthias Jaissle some funds to build the squad in his image - and that doesn't mean just doing what they've done so far, and signing potential. They need high-quality, Premier League ready performers for the here and now.

Arsenal felt they needed Guimaraes. A player that can help them retain their Premier League crown, while going one step further in Europe.

And so, who really won the saga? That will really depend on what you read, the same for every major deal this summer, as clubs scramble to shape the narrative in their direction.

But this could be one of the great rarities in modern football. A transfer that probably suits both teams equally well.

Both sets of fans can shake hands and be on with their day then. That’s probably how it will work on social media…right?
