, so here is our extensive list of new records from the knockouts.

Spain have won the

for the second time, leaving England as the only country to win the trophy once. They are the first country to hold both the men’s and women’s titles at the same time, and in 2030 they will become the first holders to host the tournament.

Argentina have now lost four

finals (1930, 1990, 2014, 2026), the joint-most along with Germany (1966, 1982, 1986, 2002).

La Albiceleste didn’t take a single shot in regular time of the final, the first time that has ever happened. They managed just two in extra time.

Even though he was not successful in the final, this was in many ways Lionel Messi’s

, establishing him as one of the competition’s greatest ever players.

After making his 31st and presumably final start, which is the most of any player in

history, Messi set very many records this summer.

The no.10 now holds the record for most appearances (34), assists (12), big chances created (24), total shots (139), shots on target (64), expected goals (19.6xG), expected assists (11.1xA), successful passes in the final third (639), passes played into the box (236), successful crosses (40), total ball carry distance (9,136 metres) and dribbles completed (137).

Messi became the first player to score in nine consecutive games and the first to score in six consecutive knockout matches. The

star is the first player to play his club football outside of Europe and score eight goals in one tournament.

Unfortunately for him, he also became the first player to miss two penalties in one tournament (excluding shootouts).

At 39 years of age, Messi is now the oldest footballer to play in the final and just the second to appear in three finals (2014, 2022, 2026) after Brazil’s Cafu (1992, 1998, 2002).

Spain’s victory was built on a strong defence, which may go down as the greatest ever in international football.

La Roja conceded just one goal, the fewest of any team in a winning campaign, and record the most clean sheets (7) ever. Unai Simon now holds the record for longest clean sheet in

history after going 519 minutes without conceding a goal. The Athletic goalkeeper didn’t allow a goal from 1st December 2022 until 10 July 2026.

Spain are just the fourth team to win the competition without going behind in any of their matches, joining Italy (1938 and 1982) and Germany (1990).

They now hold the record for the longest unbeaten run by a men’s team in competitive matches (38).

Mikel Merino is the first player to score the winning goal in two different knockout matches as a substitute.
