TOMMY'S TO DO LIST: After going crashing out of the World Cup Thomas Tuchel has a number of issues he must fix ahead of Euro 2028 - including getting the fans back on side
Thomas Tuchel has taken us on a rollercoaster ride through this World Cup.
England fans enjoyed the journey to the semi final and the glorious night in Mexico City and heroics of the win over Norway. But then the crushing defeat to Argentina has left Tuchel at his lowest point as England manager.
And now, after so much hope, comes Tuchel’s next task. Euro 2028. And, first up, here’s his to-do list and how he goes about fixing England’s problems.
This is the biggest thing of all. It is worth understanding that Tuchel has the complete faith of the FA. Disregard any suggestion that has changed. It simply hasn’t.
The FA
view this semi final as a chance to win, record the best World Cup performance on foreign soil and that would be a success. Of course they wanted more. But his position is not under threat.
However, his standing is under threat - with the fans. They are the ones who are upset that Tuchel blew it. I have spoken to so many here in the United States and they en masse blame the manager rather than the players.
They think he got his subs wrong, his tactics wrong and he was to blame for the way England finished that game - and surrendered.
The relationship between Tuchel and the fans will take a lot of repairing. It’s hard when you lose the fans. I don’t think he has entirely. But he must get them back onside with results - and quickly.

Tuchel’s comments in the wake of the Argentina were open, brutal and maybe too honest (even if they were very newsworthy). I’ve seen written that Tuchel privately told his players to do things differently.
There’s no private about it - he said it publicly. He talked about England not having it in their DNA to keep the ball. He told them to be less passive, more active, he wanted more from the wing backs. He told them to keep going.
As journalists, we like his openness. Tuchel is always open - and is not afraid to speak his mind. But some players don’t like it.
Some England players thought he was to blame for the defensive changes and he is now shifting the blame with his comments.
They all talked about a togetherness, a brotherhood and a close knit group in this tournament. The fall-out from the semi final will test that.

This World Cup might prove to be
Jordan Pickford
’s last as No1. He is now under pressure with James Trafford admitting he will push hard.
What about
Harry Kane
? Can he carry on forever? If Tuchel has lost faith in
Marcus Rashford
then move on. Be ruthless with those players and the fall-out from this.
If you are going to question the team’s DNA then how about putting players in who actually want to keep the ball.
Kobbie Mainoo
and Alex Scott spring to mind.
The “home” Euros is just around the corner and England need to make some changes.
Sorry, but what a nonsense. Tino Livramento went home before we kicked off.
Reece James
was a mistake - he never played at his best because he spent much of the season injured.
There’s a lesson here… pick fit and sharp players. That must be a post-it note on Tuchel’s desk ahead of the Euros.

England have a bright new breed of players - they are exactly what we need to lift the squad ahead of Euro 2028.
The likes of Rio Ngumoha, Max Dowman and Alex Scott would give England such a lift going into the Nations League and Euros.
Young players bring freshness, energy and enthusiasm which the crowd buy into.
