Tottenham get new Pedro Porro injury update as official statement issued

Tottenham have been handed a new injury update on Pedro Porro after the right-back picked up an apparent hamstring injury during the defeat to Aston Villa

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro has withdrawn from international duty with Spain due to injury.

The 27-year-old was taken off in the first half of Saturday's 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa. He went down with an apparent hamstring problem and received treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Archie Gray.

Porro, who was making just his third start of the season after having an extended break following the World Cup earlier this summer, cut a frustrated figure as he hit the ground before limping off with the help of Tottenham's medical staff. He made his first appearance of the season as a substitute in the 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic before starting in back-to-back matches against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

But Porro then sat out of the goalless draw against Everton and the 3-1 defeat at Liverpool last Tuesday after Roberto De Zerbi said he had a "small muscular problem". The former Sporting CP man was back for the game against Villa but broke down in the first half and is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

Delivering a new update on Porro after his latest injury setback on Saturday, De Zerbi said: "Listen, Pedro, I said after the World Cup, I said the management of Pedro should be different, because after the World Cup, many games. I don't know what the problem is. It's a hamstring, I think. Hopefully, it's not a big problem."

However, the issue is bad enough to keep Porro out of the Spain squad for four Nations League fixtures during the expanded three-week international break. He had been included in Luis de la Fuente's squad - his first since winning the World Cup - for matches against England, Czechia and Croatia twice.

Although Porro has withdrawn from the squad, Spain have decided not to call-up a replacement. They travel to England first up at Wembley Stadium on Saturday before hosting Croatia three days later.

Tottenham were without the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert against Villa, and now Porro is expected to join them on the injury table.

De Zerbi's side, who remain without a win in the Premier League this season, return to action after the international break with a trip to face Manchester United on October 10, before going up against Coventry, Chelsea and Crystal Palace. They sit bottom of the table, having picked up two points from a possible 15.
