Tottenham and Newcastle could unveil fresh recruits as two new-look sides clash in the Premier League.

Spurs have signed Savio and Omar Marmoush in a double deal from Manchester City, following the hugely disappointing 3-0 defeat at Brentford in their Premier League opener last weekend. Savio scored on his debut as Roberto De Zerbi’s team beat Charlton in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Newcastle have also been busy in the market and added an experienced midfielder in Nico Gonzalez as a replacement for Sando Tonali, who faces his former team this evening following his £100m switch to north London.

Matthias Jaissle was denied a first Premier League as Liverpool scored a late penalty in a thrilling 2-2 draw last weekend, with Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga among the attacking players who seem to be given a new lease of life under the new Newcastle boss.

Roberto De Zerbi eyes another Tottenham signing after double Man City swoop

Roberto De Zerbi has expressed his delight after Tottenham secured the "bomba" additions of Savio and Omar Marmoush, while hinting that further recruitment could take place prior to Tuesday night's transfer deadline.

"I think Savio and Marmoush are bomba. I don’t know what name or how you can call them but players of a high level, for sure," De Zerbi stated ahead of Newcastle's visit in the Premier League on Saturday.

"I didn’t expect one transfer market and one window like we have done.

"I think we can do one player more and in one specific position, but yesterday we went for dinner with the owners, with Vinai (Venkatesham), with Johan (Lange) and with Enrico (Venturelli). We spoke about this, but we have all of us on the same page and there is a very good connection."

Don't write Newcastle off

Newcastle, meanwhile, had a much more encouraging opening weekend.

Their draw of Liverpool - which without a last-gasp Dominic Szoboszlai penalty would have been a win - delivered just the performance needed to settle any nerves in a new era under Matthias Jaissle.

Fans have been quick to write off the Magpies this summer after a couple months of major personnel changes, with some even predicting relegation. Last weekend was a quick reminder not to jump to drastic conclusions.

Opening day disaster at Brentford

For all of Tottenham’s spending, it was same old Spurs as the season got underway last weekend.

A 3-0 defeat at the Gtech, which was actually a pretty flattering result, showed that Roberto De Zerbi still has quite the job on his hands to get this Tottenham team back to where they were.

Tottenham's unconvincing record against Newcastle

Tottenham have lost six of their last eight league games against Newcastle and you have to go back to 2023 for their last win when Richarlison scored twice in a 4-1 home win.

Since then, they have lost four and drawn one and not kept a clean sheet in their last 14 meetings.

The Magpies have actually won more Premier League matches away at Tottenham than against any other sides with 13 victories, including three in their last four trips.

What the managers said

Now to one of the players that will fill the void left by Sandro Tonali (and Bruno Guimaraes) this summer, with Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle convinced Nico Gonzalez will not take long to hit the ground running.

“He trained with us and he looks sharp,” Jaissle said. “It will take time (to adapt) and I can not tell you how long it takes but he’s a smart player, he has huge potential and already brings so much quality in the squad. He will adapt fast into our way of playing and then we can enjoy.”

Asked how he persuaded Gonzalez to join, Jaissle added: “I don’t need to sell a lot, with that fan base, with that history, this is a special club.

“We have a clear idea how we want to play football, we are brave in our approach, how we are targeting the future, so I think all these aspects were influencing him in a positive way, so that he finally was convinced to join us.”

Jaissle is also hopeful that Gonzalez will not be the last person through the door in this summer’s window, with Belgium wideman Matias Fernandez-Pardo tipped to move to Tyneside from Lille.

“It’s the first message of the morning – to push,” Jaissle said. “The management and Ross (Wilson), the sporting director, they’re doing an amazing job, trying everything.

“We want to be smart, we don’t want to act in panic, so I’m really optimistic things will happen.”

Sandro Tonali will expect a hostile reception from the Newcastle fans but his manager Roberto De Zerbi is unequivocal in his belief the Italian is worth every penny for Tottenham.

De Zerbi said: “Sandro Tonali’s value is that value because he is one of the most important midfielders in the Premier League.

“He received two big offers for two big teams in the Premier League. It’s not correct to say their clubs but two big clubs fought with us to bring him and he wanted to come here. I heard the fans were very happy for Sandro’s signing.

“He’s a complete midfielder.”

Omar Marmoush has been handed his Spurs debut just a couple days after completing his move from Man City, but there is no sign of Savio in the squad after his impressive cameo against Charlton in the week.

We’re going to learn the confirmed line-ups of both sides in a few minutes, but this is what we know so far.

Tottenham were relieved to discover that James Maddison’s shoulder problem is not serious and he has been assessed to decide whether he can feature today. Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odebert are all out with knee injuries, while Pape Sarr’s availability is also uncertain amid transfer speculation.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are without William Osula who picked up a foot problem against Liverpool, joining Dan Burn, Joelinton and Tino Livramento on the treatment table. Bazoumana Toure should be deemed fit.

The main attraction, however, will be the new boys. There could be league debuts for Omar Marmoush and Savio for Spurs, while Nico Gonzalez could also make his Newcastle bow.
