July 19, 2026 is already a special date for all Spaniards. It was the day Spain defeated Argentina in the World Cup final, thus earning its second star after the title won in South Africa in 2010. The hero of MetLife Stadium, the venue that hosted the clash between La Roja and La Albiceleste, was Ferran Torres.
The Barça forward scored the winning goal in extra time after an assist from Nico Williams. In addition, minutes later, he had the chance to score a brace, but the play was ruled out for offside. The truth is that Ferran was given a standing ovation upon his arrival in Madrid, where Luis de la Fuente’s side managed to gather almost two million people.
The Spanish National Team toured several streets of the capital before arriving at Cibeles, where the celebration continued with performances by, among others, Arde Bogotá, Ana Mena, Lola Índigo and Aitana. However, one detail, or rather one cap, stole all the attention during the celebrations.
Donald Trump thanks Ferran Torres: "A nice tribute, we appreciate it"
"Ferran Torres, the author of the goal that allowed Spain to lift the World Cup, put on a cap with the following slogan: “Make Spain Great Again.” Something that recalled the famous MAGA (‘Make America Great Again’), the slogan used by Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.
In fact, the White House’s official social media account reacted to the Barcelona forward’s gesture. “Everyone wants to join the movement”, they wrote in response to the images of La Roja’s ‘7’.
"Now it has been Donald Trump himself, the highest leader of the United States, who wanted to comment on that gesture: “A great player and he was basically wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ cap. I saw it as a nice tribute and I think he said it with very good intentions, we appreciate it. (...) A nice gesture! He did it very kindly and we appreciate it. It was a great compliment”.
