TUCH LUCK: England boss Thomas Tuchel's biggest snub decided as Premier League star 'so unlucky' to miss out on 27-man squad

Thomas Tuchel and England have dusted themselves down and are ready to kick off the next chapter after getting over their World Cup heartbreak.

Perhaps still stinging from the backlash over that Argentina defeat, Tuchel has picked his 26-man squad for the extended three week international break which will see England face Spain and Croatia along with a double-header against Czechia.

As always, there are no shortage of talking points - and big names unhappy. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer, two of the headline snubs in the summer, are back in after missing the World Cup. On the other hand, Harry Maguire is a noticeable absentee after Tuchel opted against taking the Manchester defender to the World Cup while in-form Premier League stars such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Adam Wharton are also out.

The coming games will give us a glimpse of what the future could hold for England as Tuchel and Co. set their sights on Euro 2028. But some of the omissions are more eyebrow-raising than others - and don't forget to vote for your one in our interactive poll below.

The biggest omission from this England squad is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Based on form, the Everton midfielder should be in because he is in the best form of his career and has been as good as anyone. Basically, if Dewsbury-Hall cannot get in now then he probably never will. He has impressed in midfield with his strength, good passing and ability to push forward.

His performances have been outstanding and must have caught Thomas Tuchel’s eye when Everton got their draw at Tottenham last Saturday. Maybe he is not the most fashionable name or even most stylish player but he has made a compelling case above others.

People can talk all they like about Morgan Gibbs-White and no-one doubts his quality and the influence he has on Nottingham Forest. But Tuchel was right. You can only play so many players and picking five No. 10s is a complete waste of time.

So, who would you leave out? Cole Palmer? Jude Bellingham? Morgan Rogers? Sorry, but I’m not sure Gibbs-White gets in ahead of any of them. But there is perhaps more of an opening in midfield. Kobbie Mainoo did not get a kick at the World Cup and has not started the season well in a struggling Man United team.

It’s time for a chance and Dewsbury-Hall is so unlucky.

It was never going to happen, especially as he has not featured in the Premier League or the Champions League this season, but the sooner Max Dowman is in the England squad the better.

Lamine Yamal made his debut for Spain at the age of 16 years and 57 days. Dowman is 16 years and 261 days old. He is part of the Premier League champions’ senior squad, he can be part of England’s senior squad. That sort of maverick selection is exactly what these international get-togethers are for.

But as Dowman was never going to be selected, the genuinely unlucky omission has to be Adam Wharton. The Crystal Palace midfielder is a class act, and he will find it tough to see Myles Lewis-Skelly get the nod ahead of him.

Wharton must think Thomas Tuchel simply does not rate him. If that is the case, it is hard to understand.
