(Video) Jeremy Jacquet saves Liverpool with ‘outstanding’ early moment v Nottingham Forest

Jeremy Jacquet hasn’t taken long to become a darling of the Kop, and that admiration will have been enhanced by a brilliant piece of play from Liverpool’s new centre-back.

The 21-year-old won plenty of praise for his performance in the pre-season win over Como at Anfield a fortnight ago and has started both of the Reds’ first two Premier League fixtures in 2026/27.

The Frenchman is making his first competitve appearance in L4 against Nottingham Forest this afternoon, and Andoni Iraola will have been indebted to the youngster inside the first few minutes of the game.

Jacquet saves Liverpool with vital block

In the 11th minute, Ola Aina delivered a cross from the right flank which picked out Dan Ndoye at the far post.

The Switzerland forward nodded it down to Igor Jesus, who must’ve thought he was about to score from inside the six-yard box, only for Jacquet to throw his body in front of the ball and direct it away for a corner kick.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday for Sky Sports, Clinton Morrison sang the defender’s praises as he gushed: “It’s an unbelievable cross from Aina to the back post… the tackle from Jacquet is outstanding. Everyone’s talking about this lad and he looks good.”

Jacquet justifying his selection by Iraola

Having cost an initial £55m from Rennes in a deal agreed nearly seven months ago, the Frenchman has been immediately entrusted with a place in Liverpool’s starting XI ahead of the on-loan Ronald Araujo.

The 21-year-old is quickly repaying Iraola’s faith (and that of the club) with moments of excellent defending such as the goal-saving block from Jesus in the opening minutes against Forest.

Unfortunately for Jacquet and Liverpool, they fell behind in the 24th minute as Ndoye fired past Alisson Becker to give the visitors a lead that they deserved on the balance of play up to that point.

The Reds won’t want to be left relying on brilliant last-ditch defending to keep opponents at bay, and if it weren’t for our number 5, we’d find ourselves in an even worse position after half an hour of this game.
