Manchester United came from behind to down Ipswich and secure their first Premier League win of the season thanks to a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick - but the win wasn't without its controversy.

Leif Davis shocked the Stretford End when he put Ipswich ahead on 29 minutes before the host drew themselves level thanks to talisman Fernandes, who was sent clear after a defensive mishap.

Jacob Greaves put through his own net to put United ahead for the first time, but only after Harry Maguire had handled the ball before receiving a VAR reprieve.

Fernandes was on hand to score from 12 yards to give Michael Carrick's side a two-goal cushion on the hour mark before he bagged his third United treble thanks a fortuitous bounce that allowed him to score from close range. Bryan Mbuemo completed the rout before Chuba Akpom scored a consolation in stoppage time.

The visitors, who once lost this fixture 9-0 back in the 1990s, were certainly don't going to allow a repeat. Julio Enciso showcased immense pace to race onto a long ball before Senne Lammens denied him. The Belgian was beaten though when Davis put the Tractor Boys ahead.

Abdul Fatawu squared up and beat Luke Shaw before firing in his cross, which the Ipswich left-back met first time with his shot cannoning in off the crossbar to silence Old Trafford.

United, as they have done regularly in recent years, needed their PFA Player of the Year to haul them out of trouble. An Ipswich error left the hosts two-on-one and Fernandes was sent clear by Matheus Cunha, before hammering past Kjell Scherpen.

The Red Devils missed the chance to put themselves ahead early in the second-half when Bryan Mbuemo somehow hit the bar from a yard out, but Maguire soon had them ahead in controversial circumstances which will go down as a Greaves own goal.

United firmly took control of the contest when Fernandes scored his second from the spot after Cunha had been fouled. He would complete his hat-trick before Mbeumo got on the scoresheet to add further gloss to the result.

Having just been named the Premier League's best player off the back of what he did last season, where he broke record for assists in a single campaign, Fernandes is clearly flowing with confidence at an all-time high.

Gary Neville remarked on commentary that the Portuguese playmaker is the best signing of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era and few could disagree. In fact it is almost impossible to disagree. Fernandes was United's talisman last season and, even with the quality around him, that status doesn't look like changing.

Never will the England defender be so glad to see a shot be heading wide, but the influence of VAR and the laws they can intervene on will be under serious scrutiny after United's second goal, which put them in charge of the contest.

Maguire clearly handled the ball seconds before he took his shot, but as his effort was going wide and deflected in by Greaves, it meant his actions weren't under the microscope as the goalscorer. Had he scored then we may have had a different outcome - and that will not sit well with many.

The last time Ipswich were in the top flight under Kieran McKenna it was off the back of successive promotions and the Tractor Boys ultimately won just four games and finished 16 points from safety. Their squad looked that bit short, but this time round they've got several of the players who will be better off for that experience.

They've also got the likes of Daizen Maeda, signed from Celtic, and several individuals who've impressed in the Premier League previously, Issa Diop among them. Gary O'Neil has top flight experience as a manager.

Crazy to think that you could take any positives from such a hammering defeat, but for an hour Ipswich were in this game and it needed a controversial moment before the floodgates opened. O'Neil needs to see the first 60 minutes as a blueprint for the season.

Last season started slow and then he became known as a super sub, coming off the bench to win numerous games once United hit form. But heading into his second season the Slovenian will surely have felt he'd done enough to begin establishing himself in the first XI.

Instead he began on the bench for a second week in succession. His introduction came late against Hull and this weekend he was only given 11 minutes by Carrick. If Sesko was hoping to kick on, his plans are certainly on hold.

Few would've thought that it would only take Rashford one game of the Premier League season before he was back starting games for United again. Their attack was purring last season under Carrick without him and there didn't seem to be any great clamour for him to return.

But a lot can change in a short space of time and Rashford was called upon at half-time against Hull last weekend, even if he couldn't turn the tide the day. Nevertheless he did enough to convince his boss that he was worthy of a start as his secondcoming at his boyhood club continues.
