West Brom push to sign Man Utd player that Bruno Fernandes thinks is 'class'

The Baggies are interested in bringing Toby Collyer back to The Hawthorns.

West Bromwich Albion are reportedly interested in bringing Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer back to The Hawthorns before the end of the summer transfer window.

This has been reported by Sky Sports’ Manchester United reporter Danyal Khan, who has detailed how Albion have approached the Red Devils over a move before the 1st September deadline.

The Baggies are understood to be exploring a permanent deal for the 22-year-old, as they seek a replacement for Alex Mowatt.

West Brom James Morrison spoke about the need to bring another central midfielder following on from Mowatt’s departure to Championship rivals Derby County earlier this week, and it seems as if he’s spotted potential in Collyer, despite his injury woes when last at The Hawthorns.

West Brom are looking to add to the seven players they’ve currently brought in this summer transfer window so far, with the Baggies eyeing up a move for Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer.

Albion have already bolstered their midfield ranks with the signings of Felix Horn Myhre and Rabby Nzingoula, but are still a midfielder light after sanctioning the departure of Alex Mowatt to Derby County last week.

Meanwhile, Jayson Molumby has been linked with a move to Wrexham earlier on in the window, so it’s clear Albion still have work to do in that department before it’s well-equipped enough to take on the rest of this Championship slog.

Sky Sports’ Manchester United reporter Danyal Khan has broken this development, revealing that the Baggies are interested in bringing Collyer back to the Black Country on a permanent basis, with Morrison looking to bring young and hungry players into the squad that can make a big difference.

Described as 'class' by Bruno Fernandes, Toby Collyer spent the first half of last season on loan at West Brom, linking up with then boss Ryan Mason and so hopeful of making a big impact in the Championship.

But injury woes would really take their toll on his time in the blue and white stripes, with Collyer restricted to just 12 appearances due to a niggling calf issue, before having his loan cut short in January.

Collyer would then move back to the Championship on loan with Hull City for the remainder of the campaign, but he would be plagued by more injury issues, with a twisted ankle injury in training meaning the midfielder played just five times, watching his Tigers team-mates go on to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Collyer has since returned to Old Trafford and featured in much of their pre-season games under Michael Carrick, but it appears they are still willing to part ways with the midfielder, with the Baggies seemingly interested in taking the chance to sign him.

West Brom's interest in Toby Collyer may well divide opinion, with many Baggies supporters taking to X to voice their opinions.

Albion supporter Miles isn't a fan of the move, far from convinced by his performances during his loan spell.

Meanwhile, Jamie is also unconvinced, believing the Baggies should be looking for better midfielders than Collyer.

Renno is also against the move, likening Collyer's injury problems at Albion to that of current first-team player Tammer Bany.

However, there are West Brom fans out there in favour of a move, with Albion supporter Lewis believing Collyer can bounce back from a tough last season of injuries.

Connor also likes the prospect of a Collyer return, believing James Morrison would be able to manage Collyer better than what Ryan Mason did.

Finally, Suraj expressed optimism over a Collyer deal, but insists the club have to get him for the right fee to outweigh the injury risks he poses.

Toby Collyer, West Brom move would come as a surprise

West Brom fans will certainly be surprised to see the club linked with bringing Toby Collyer back to The Hawthorns this summer, with his injury record last season a cause for concern.

There was undoubtedly bags of talent in Collyer’s game that he displayed with Albion in such a short sample size, but his inability to keep fit meant he couldn’t make the impact he would have craved in the Black Country, and it was a spell that came to an unfortunate end at the turn of 2026.

But now Collyer may get a chance at redemption with the Baggies, although he will have to win the crowd round and prove that he can remain fit for the majority of the season.

A permanent move will also be a bit of a shock for supporters to discover, with Albion potentially taking a risky punt on a player whose injury record is a sight for sore eyes.

Nevertheless, it appears Albion boss James Morrison sees promise in Collyer and believes he can get the best out of him, with the Baggies certainly undergoing a revamp in the midfield department for this 2026-27 campaign.
