What Could Tyler Adams Bring To Manchester United?

Glamorous names get fans talking, particularly in the dopamine-driven age of social media. Supporters crave that 100m-pound signing that they can talk about down in the pub. The heightened price tag gives them optimism that the player will be a success, but history has proven that this is more often than not untrue.

In the days gone by, fans begged Manchester United and the hierarchy to make smart choices, not big choices. The Reds spent £100s of millions on players who either did not want to play for the club or were getting paid enough money that the trajectory of it did not really appeal to them in one way or another.

Now that United are making what many would call smart choices, some sections of the fanbase have switched back to wanting big choices, which would likely only lead to making the same mistakes.

Youri Tielemans is an immense signing, particularly for the price tag United paid. Andrey Santos could very well go on to become one of the signings of the summer for the price tag for the same reason. In a market where fees have become increasingly inflated, securing a player of his quality for that price could end up looking like a bargain. Football has become obsessed with the idea that spending £100 million automatically solves a team’s problems. More often than not, more value and sometimes quality lies in the lower-priced targets, and Tyler Adams could certainly sit in that bracket for Man United this summer.

SHOULD UNITED SIGN TYLER ADAMS?

Adams is well known to Christopher Vivell from his time at RB Leipzig, where he won a DFB Pokal with the club. Adams had been in the Red Bull Group football network before his switch to the German side, having an impressive period at New York Red Bulls. The 27-year-old was named in the MLS All-Star team in 2018, where he also won the Supporters’ Shield with the American side during that campaign.

The central midfielder has been a key part of one of the most impressive sides in the Premier League in Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth since signing for the club on August 20th 2023. Adams has featured in 62 games in all competitions since then, starting in 47 of those during that period. An impressive return for one of the most underrated midfielders in the division.

Iraola in the past has praised Adams on numerous occasions, with the Spaniard previously commending the former Leipzig man’s leadership qualities within the group at Bournemouth, and suggesting the midfielder has been a leader at every club he’s played for. To add some context to the level of leadership Adams is said to have, he was the youngest captain at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and was labelled as “unbelievable” by Fulham defender Tim Ream, who would have been one of the older players in the national team setup at that time.

Liverpool are among the clubs interested in Tyler Adams, with Manchester United also interested in the American midfielder. Both clubs are heavily driven by data, with United only beginning to use the services in depth recently. Liverpool have always been privy to the Moneyball way of doing things, and when you look in detail at the statistics behind Tyler Adams, he profiles are one of the most impressive midfielders in Europe.

Many have suggested United need a player who can cover large spaces with intense running ability, and statistically, Adams profiles well in those metrics. He covered the 13th highest distance among Premier League midfielders last season, while also ranking 13th in high-speed running quantity. His sprint quantity overall is the second highest out of 85 Premier League midfielders, along with his sprint distance ranking the exact same. In terms of actual pace along the ground, Adams ranks as the 9th fastest midfielder in the entire division for max speed reached.

They are tremendous numbers that may go under the radar. When compared to someone like Sandro Tonali, who just went to Tottenham for £100m, Adams outranks the Italian in nearly every metric when it comes to sprints and running quality and power per 90 minutes. That same trend can be seen when compared with Moises Caicedo, Ryan Gravenberch, Rodri, Declan Rice, Adam Wharton and even the new £116m man Elliot Anderson.

Even when compared with Carlos Baleba, someone many feel, due to his running metrics, could be the one to solve United’s issues chasing back to their own goal, Adams is vastly superior in that department too. The Bournemouth midfielder is also 4th for tackles made, and 6th for tackles won across the entire Premier League, proving his running ability isn’t just for show; he backs it up with possession-winning tackles too.

Adams does the work that goes unnoticed in a football team, but is usually more pivotal to the success than anything else on the pitch. United have technicians in the team in Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans. They have creators in Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes and Shea Lacey. A player like Tyler Adams to go alongside Andrey Santos at the base of that midfield could send United to that next level, and they wouldn’t even have to spend that much money to do so.

For a metric like defensive contributions per 90, the 27-year-old ranks close to his Bournemouth team-mate Alex Scott, with 11.8, to Scott’s 12. Matheus Fernandes, a former target of United’s who left West Ham for £85m, only achieved 11 defensive contributions per 90 last season. Among midfielders, only Florentino Luis, Rodrigo Bentancur, Vitaly Janelt and Moises Caicedo ranked higher than Adams in the Premier League for interceptions per 90. United’s Manuel Ugarte should be mentioned, as he had the highest in the entire league among midfielders.

The stats read brilliantly, but Adams also passes the eye test too. During United’s clash with Bournemouth earlier in the season at Old Trafford, there was a clear power struggle change before and after Adams went off the pitch through injury. Bournemouth are a more concise and controlled side with the American in it. The same can be said for the US, who were one of the most exciting sides at this year’s World Cup up until their exit to Belgium.

A big thing for United in recent years has also been the proven Premier League aspect. It seems to be a huge part of their recruitment model, as players who have never played within the division need an adjustment period that sometimes is not guaranteed at a club like the side from Manchester. The Reds have signed Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, as well as Youri Tielemans and now Andrey Santos, all within the past two windows. The first two, particularly Cunha, have been relatively successful, with the same expected for both Tielemans and Santos.

Adams is someone who has been in the league since 2022, having previously fought to keep Leeds United in the division during his first campaign. During that first campaign at Leeds, only Joao Palhinha and Casemiro boasted more tackles per 90 than the 27-year-old. Furthermore, by the time January had rolled around within that campaign, Adams was among a list of just six midfielders with 100 interceptions, 100 ball recoveries and 100 final third entries in the entire Premier League. Those six players were Rodri, Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, Joao Palhinha and Tyler Adams. The American is keeping elite company when compared with his peers, so why is he not held in the same esteem as some of them?

This is also a player who has Champions League experience and has played in a Champions League semi-final with Leipzig in the past. In fact, Adams scored late on in the Quarter-Final to send his team into the last four against Atletico Madrid, becoming the first American to score in the Quarter-Final or later within the competition’s history. Unfortunately for Leipzig that season, they missed out on the final to a Kylian Mbappe-led PSG, a game in which the midfielder started.

Statistically, there are few better overall than Adams. Visually, he’s an intelligent, tenacious footballer with immense running ability and clever in-game IQ. At around £40m, which is expected to be a fee he could leave for, he represents much better value than many of the other targets being touted for £70-90m on the market at present. Many have suggested Manu Kone, but is he truly a better player than the Bournemouth midfielder? And if placed within a midfield in the Premier League, would he impress as much as Adams has at both Leeds and Bournemouth?

Personality-wise, a big reason many fail at Manchester United relates back to succumbing to the pressure of playing for such a big club. Adams has in the past made clear he is a player who plays without fear, and has previously spoken on record about pressure being a privilege. The 27-year-old has also spoken about how the way you play and perform in a game can be a mirror into the character of a person. That’s an important word for someone wanting to be successful at United. Character. The club needs more character to become the entity they were 10-15 years ago.

These are the type of players that United have been targeting. The Matheus Cunha types. The Benjamin Seskos and Bryan Mbeumos who relish the opportunity of awakening the sleeping giant at Old Trafford. The Bournemouth midfielder would fit into that bracket of player, which would be in keeping with the recruitment policy that INEOS seem to be implementing at the club.

Manchester United need to buy smart, not necessarily big. And given the huge amounts of evidence working in his favour, Tyler Adams could be one of the smartest signings the club have made in years.
