New eras begin for both rivals at Craven Cottage on Monday evening, with Xabi Alonso taking charge of Chelsea for the first time in a competitive fixture after being hired as the permanent successor to Liam Rosenior.

There will be a very familiar face in the opposing dugout in SW6, with former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Spain team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa handed the Fulham reins following Marco Silva’s exit and subsequent move to Benfica.

Arbeloa was promoted from B team duties to succeed Alonso as Real Madrid head coach in January after the latter departed following just eight months in charge, but lasted only four months himself before making way for the shock return of Jose Mourinho to the Bernabeu.

There are high hopes for Chelsea under Alonso, who has plenty of options to work with following a typically busy summer in the transfer market that included the club-record £117million signing of England star Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

With no fixture pile-up in the absence of any European competition this term, he is expected to improve massively on the club’s dismal 10th-place finish last term that saw them reach the FA Cup final but still go through two permanent managers in Enzo Maresca and Rosenior, with Calum McFarlane twice stepping up as caretaker boss.

Meanwhile, there is an element of the unknown about Fulham after five years under Silva, with Arbeloa as yet unproven as a manager at senior first-team level.

He has returned to his old club to bolster his current squad, raiding Madrid for the likes of Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios but losing other key players such as Harry Wilson.

TV channel: In the UK, Fulham vs Chelsea is being televised live tonight on Sky Sports. Coverage of Monday Night Football begins at 6:30pm BST on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League, with kick-off at 8pm.
