Who will be the first EPL manager to be sacked this season? Carrick lands on unwanted podium

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick is now considered among the three most likely Premier League managers to be sacked next.

The Red Devils gathered more points than any other club last season when the 45-year-old tactician took over from Ruben Amorim.

The returning club legend propelled Man Utd from 7th place to third in the table, ensuring Champions League qualification with a rather comfortable margin.

Carrick’s exploits last term earned him the permanent role, but the situation has drastically differed this season.

While some had tipped Man Utd to enter the title discussion based on last season’s form, these hopes were swiftly dashed, as the club has only gathered four points in as many Premier League fixtures.

In their last league outing, they lost to a Manchester City side that played with a man down for the bulk of the game.

United followed it up by crashing out of the Carabao Cup after squandering an early two-goal lead against Brighton, who pounced on their hosts’ shambolic defending to complete a shocking turnaround.

So despite the club’s public backing, many believe Carrick is walking on thin ice already, with candidates’ names beginning to resurface.

According to Oddschecker, the odds of Man Utd sacking their head coach went from 9/1 to 10/3 following the defeat to Brighton.

Hence, the 45-year-old is now considered the third most likely Premier League manager to be sacked next.

Alvaro Arbeloa is the huge favourite (1/2), as his Fulham has only picked up a point in four weeks. Coventry City boss Frank Lampard is the second in line. Although the newly-promoted side has yet to register a point, the Chelsea icon still has some credit from last season’s achievements.

After an underwhelming transfer market, Man Utd fans rallied around Carrick, realising his mission will be rather difficult, with the management failing to plug some of the holes in the squad, especially at left-back.

But regardless of the hierarchy’s obvious blunders, much more has been expected from the head coach and his players this season.

Thanks to his status as a club legend and his solid performances last season, Carrick should be able to buy himself extra time, but unless he can turn things around in the coming weeks, we could be about to witness a third mid-season managerial change in as many years at Carrington.
