Will Brighton let Evan Ferguson leave? Wolves & Wrexham need to consider late swoops

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wrexham must plot moves for Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson this summer

Brighton and Hove Albion have a squad stacked with young attacking talent, with a new prospect emerging every other year, as the Seagulls must make a big decision regarding the future of one of their brightest stars.

Brighton seem to uncover a new star every season, but as one young talent comes to the fore, someone else must make way, as Irish striker Evan Ferguson has been swept to the side across the past couple of seasons.

Ferguson is still only 21, but having emerged in the Seagulls' first team as an 18-year-old, bagging a hat-trick against Newcastle United in the Premier League before his 19th birthday, the striker was tipped for stardom and to continue his rapid trajectory.

Links to Manchester United were reported, but the Irishman chose to stay on the South Coast, a decision that, in hindsight, may not have been the correct one for his career.

Ferguson has struggled with recurring ankle injuries ever since being thrust into the spotlight as a teenager, but despite this, has still managed to rack up 80 first-team appearances for Brighton, scoring 17 and assisting six.

However, having fallen behind Danny Welbeck and Georginio Rutter in recent years, as well as the likes of Stefanos Tzimas, Charalampos Kostoulas, and Promise David for competition now, there is no obvious route for the Irishman into Fabian Hurzeler's side.

Loan spells with West Ham United and Roma have produced varying degrees of success, and a loan move to Genoa was seemingly agreed the other week, though the Italian side have now confirmed the capture of former Preston North End striker Milutin Osmajic, putting Ferguson's move in doubt.

Now, entering the final week of the window, where he will be playing his football next season remains up in the air, as these two Championship clubs should be exploring loan deals for the 21-year-old.

Wolverhampton Wanderers can boast the likes of Adam Armstrong, Tawanda Chirewa, and Raul Jimenez up top, the latter of whom returned to the club this summer for a second spell.

Armstrong started up top in the Old Gold's first game back in the Championship at home to Blackburn Rovers, as Jimenez took his place up top in their following clash away to Preston North End.

Between them, Armstrong and Jimenez have scored over 300 career goals, as Peixoto knows exactly what he is getting from the experienced pair.

However, whether Chirewa is capable of filling that void should one of them get injured remains to be seen, as Ferguson would not only offer exceptional cover for the pair, he would push them both heavily for a starting berth in the Black Country.

With injuries hampering his development and minutes in recent years, Ferguson needs a platform where he can receive regular minutes and rebuild his confidence in front of goal, and stepping down to the Championship for a team expected to be fighting towards the top could be the perfect next step for the Irishman.

Ferguson would follow in the footsteps of Kevin Doyle and Robbie Keane as Irish strikers to have worn the Gold of Wolves, and the Brighton hitman could be a real coup if they could strike a loan deal with the Seagulls.

Wrexham have not been afraid to be ambitious in the transfer market in recent years, with that having been reflected in the most recent transfer window.

Danny Imray, Ben Whiteman, and Anthony Patterson have arrived for over a combined £15 million, whilst the Welsh outfit, backed by the financial power of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have targeted lucrative moves for Norwegian defender Henrik Falchener and Lyon forward Pavel Šulc as of late.

With Kieffer Moore, Sam Smith, Davis Keillor-Dunn, and Bailey Cadamarteri as options in the centre-forward role, Phil Parkinson is not exactly lacking when it comes to choices in that area.

However, they lack a real statement centre-forward, one that is capable of firing them towards that elusive Premier League promotion, and Ferguson could be the perfect fit.

Parkinson has always tended to prefer a tall, physical option as his main centre-forward over the years, hence Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher, and Moore, as Ferguson would fall into that category.
