Former Aston Villa midfielder Ray Houghton has warned Alejandro Garnacho that “alarm bells should be ringing” as the former Manchester United winger attempts to rebuild his career under Unai Emery.

Speaking to GOAL, Houghton argued that the Argentina international must seize his loan opportunity at Villa after difficult spells at Old Trafford and Chelsea.

Garnacho has only just arrived in the West Midlands, but the move already carries considerable importance. After leaving Manchester United for Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2025, he scored only one Premier League goal during his debut Chelsea campaign.

From United prospect to £40 million departure

Garnacho emerged from United’s academy as one of the club’s most exciting young attackers. Born in Madrid, he modelled his direct, explosive game on his childhood hero and former Red Devils team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

His willingness to run at defenders quickly made him a popular figure at Old Trafford. He ultimately recorded 26 goals across 144 appearances for United, demonstrating genuine match-winning potential without consistently producing his best football.

The winger’s development eventually stalled as questions grew over his decision-making and end product. His relationship with Ruben Amorim also deteriorated, contributing to him falling down the attacking pecking order.

United sanctioned a £40 million transfer to Chelsea in 2025. That deal ended a first-team journey which had contained memorable flashes but never delivered the sustained progress expected when Garnacho initially broke through.

His subsequent struggles in west London have made the Villa loan particularly significant. GOAL also notes that Garnacho missed out on Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, another setback for a player who has previously lined up alongside Lionel Messi.

Houghton demands personal responsibility

Houghton believes Garnacho’s family and close friends should be honest with him about the direction of his career, rather than allowing blame to be placed on his previous clubs.

“This is another club that’s going to give you a chance. You’ve got to seize it. No more excuses,” Houghton told GOAL.

The former Villa player added that responsibility now rests with Garnacho to be prepared whenever Emery gives him an opportunity. That message feels especially relevant because a starting place has not immediately been handed to the winger.

Garnacho played only four minutes from the bench in Villa’s opening match of the 2026/27 campaign, a damaging 4-0 defeat away to Brighton and Hove Albion.

His next possible chance comes against reigning Premier League champions Arsenal at Villa Park. With Villa also preparing to return to Champions League competition, there should be opportunities available if he can earn Emery’s trust.

Why Emery could revive Garnacho

Houghton backed Emery as the right manager to restore the winger’s confidence, pointing to the Spaniard’s combination of demanding standards and what he described as “tough love”.

“If anyone’s going to get the best out of him, I think it would be him,” Houghton said of the Villa manager.

He cited Youri Tielemans as an example of a player whose performances improved after a difficult period under Emery. Houghton believes the Villa boss can offer support while still removing any room for sentimentality.

For United supporters, Garnacho’s next chapter will be watched with interest. His talent was never really in doubt at Old Trafford, but converting isolated moments of brilliance into reliable output became the central problem.

Villa therefore represents a fresh opportunity rather than a guaranteed revival. Garnacho will need regular goals, stronger decision-making and a positive response to Emery’s demands if he is to repair the momentum lost since leaving Manchester.
