Arsenal call up summer signing from Man Utd as Arteta prepares changes

Mikel Arteta has called up Arsenal youngster James Scanlon, who signed this summer from Manchester United, ahead of their clash with Ipswich.

The fixtures continue to come thick and fast for the Gunners as they prepare to begin their Carabao Cup efforts. It is their fourth game in nine days, with the last three of those all coming on the road, and changes are expected.

Scanlon could be one of the major beneficiaries with wingers Bukayo Saka and Christos Tzolis potentially being given a break. Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze are their likely replacements but it could leave spots on the bench for the likes of Scanlon and Max Dowman, who is highly thought of in north London.

Scanlon was seen in Monday’s training session at the club’s London Colney base ahead of Tuesday night’s cup tie at Portman Road, reports the Evening Standard.

A host of young talents made the step up to first-team training, which was likely preparation for some of them being involved at Ipswich. Marli Salmon, Jaden Dixon and Andre Harriman-Annous were all part of the main group.

Scanlond, 19, has already played 24 times on the international scene having been capped by Gibraltar and last year had a loan stint away at Swindon. He's yet to play for Arsenal but has talked up what he could bring.

“I like to score goals, assist, so hopefully I can excite players who watch me,” he said in the summer. “I’m looking forward to playing, representing the badge, improving and hopefully showing people what I can do.”

Arteta has previously used the early rounds of the Carabao Cup to hand opportunities to younger players, last season Harriman-Annous made his first outing during a game against Brighton.

Arsenal have endured notable frustration in the Carabao Cup over recent years and it remains a trophy that has eluded Arteta. It was also never captured by Arsene Wenger in his 20-plus years at the club meaning Arsenal haven't won it since 1993. Last year they were losing finalists to Manchester City and the year prior they were undone in the semi-finals by eventual winners Newcastle.
