Chelsea's dream end to transfer window as Alex Scott signs and £270million stars sold

It has been a rollercoaster of a summer for Chelsea - and there may still be a few big loops left before the transfer window closes. Having already spent roughly £350million on nine new arrivals - headlined by a club-record £117m move for Morgan Rogers - the focus in SW6 has shifted abruptly from buying to selling.

With 39 senior players currently listed in their squad, Chelsea sit well over the Premier League's 25-man registration cap. Trimming it before the September 1 deadline is a substantial task, but the club's track record as sharp, effective sellers should keep panic at bay.

A late push from Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez could still force Chelsea back into the market for a replacement midfielder and after Robert Sanchez's horror show on Monday, the urge to bring in a new goalkeeper has become impossible to ignore.

With that in mind, here's what a dream end to the transfer window might look like for Xabi Alonso's Blues.

If Fernandez leaves, Chelsea will need a top-class, Premier League-proven midfielder with a high ceiling to take his place - and Alex Scott fits the bill perfectly. The Blues have reportedly already seen three bids knocked back by Bournemouth, who remain adamant the 23-year-old is off-limits. But every stand has its price, and an offer of around £80m would be hard for the Cherries to turn down.

Financially and strategically, it's a move where everyone wins. Should Fernandez force his way to Manchester City for £120-£130m, replacing a player who no longer wants to be at Stamford Bridge with Scott for £80m would leave Chelsea with a Premier League-ready replacement and a tidy £40-£50m in net profit.

Tactically, Scott is tailor-made for Alonso's high-octane system. Naturally press-resistant, he has an uncanny knack for absorbing pressure, riding tackles, and carrying the ball through compact lines. Combined with his defensive hustle and quick-release passing, Scott would give Chelsea the ideal mix of control, grit, and forward momentum.

The Fernandez saga might be getting all the headlines, but clearing out the deadwood must be Chelsea's primary focus this week. If done right, the Blues could potentially pocket upwards of £270m.

Liam Delap is reportedly on the verge of joining Nottingham Forest for £45m, with a further £5m in add-ons, while Aston Villa are in advanced talks to sign Nicolas Jackson for £65m. In an ideal scenario, both of those deals go through without incident. But Chelsea don't stop there.

They then sell young forward Marc Guiu for around £15m and outcast defender Tosin Adarabioyo for roughly the same. This, as well as fees secured from loan exits of the likes of Mykhalio Mudryk, Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino, could see the Blues pocket over £150m before the window closes.

And with City well aware that only a sum of £120m will do for Fernandez, the total could reach a staggering figure that offsets the earlier summer outlay.

Chelsea's goalkeeping situation is a lot trickier than it might seem at first glance. While Sanchez's recurring errors make upgrading a priority, spending big on a permanent fixture risks blocking a pathway for Mike Penders.

The 6ft 7in Belgian - already drawing comparisons to Thibaut Courtois - looks primed for senior football and if Chelsea's internal assessment is right, their long-term solution between the sticks is already on their books.

Splashing £60-£70m on a shiny new No. 1 brings two distinct dangers. First, it could drive Penders out of the club - a painful echo of how Chelsea previously squeezed out fellow Belgians Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, only to watch fall into enemy hands years later. Second, there's the lingering caution of the Kepa Arrizabalaga saga: the real possibility of dropping astronomical money on a marquee signing who fails to deliver.

That leaves Chelsea with two options: throw Penders straight into the deep end and have him replace Sanchez as the club's No. 1, or sign a temporary fixture to bridge the gap.

According to The Athletic, the Blues are in talks to sign Aston Villa's Emi Martinez, who could be the perfect compromise - not to sign outright, but rather to bring in on loan.

While Villa would prefer to sell Martinez - particularly after signing Zion Suzuki - Chelsea could test the waters by offering a hefty loan fee - say, £10m. Ideally, they'd then loan Penders out to a Premier League club, with Sanchez relegated to Chelsea's No. 2 for the season.

This scenario would give the Blues an elite goalkeeper immediately, but would also buy Penders a full season of breathing room without blocking his path long-term. If, in a year, Penders has proven himself, he can come back and take over the gloves from Martinez. If not, Chelsea can look elsewhere without the fear of allowing a real gem to slip through their grasp.
